To configure RIP version 2

Membership in the local Administrators group, or equivalent, is the minimum required to complete this procedure.

  1. Open the Routing and Remote Access MMC snap-in.

  2. In the console tree, expand the router name, expand IPv4, and then select RIP.

  3. In the details pane, right-click the interface you want to configure for RIP version 2, and then click Properties.

  4. On the General tab, in Operation mode, do one of the following:

    • If you want the router to send routing updates only when other routers request them, select Auto-static update. This is the default setting for demand-dial interfaces.

    • If you want the router to send routing updates periodically (every 30 seconds by default — even if there has been no change in network topology or route status), select Periodic update mode. This is the default setting for local area network (LAN) interfaces.

  5. On the General tab, in Outgoing packet protocol, do one of the following:

    • If there are RIP version 1 routers on the same network as this interface and you want the RIP version 1 routing updates sent as broadcasts, select RIP version 1 broadcast.

    • If there are RIP version 1 routers on the same network as this interface, select RIP version 2 broadcast.

    • If there are only RIP version 2 routers on the same network as this interface, or if the interface is a demand-dial interface, select RIP version 2 multicast.

    • If you want the router to update its routing table with the routing updates it receives from other routers but not announce the information in its own routing table, select Silent RIP.

  6. On the General tab, in Incoming packet protocol, do one of the following:

    • If you want the router to announce its own routes and ignore routing updates from other routers, select Ignore incoming packets.

    • If there are RIP version 1 routers on the same network as this interface, select RIP version 1 and 2.

    • If there are only RIP version 1 routers on the same network as this interface, select RIP version 1 only.

    • If there are only RIP version 2 routers on the same network as this interface, or if the interface is a demand-dial interface, select RIP version 2 only.

  7. On the General tab, configure the following settings as necessary:

    • Added cost for routes

    • Tag for announced routes

    • Activate authentication

    • Password
