Configure RIP for IP

Updated: April 30, 2010

Applies To: Windows Server 2008, Windows Server 2008 R2

Configure Routing Information Protocol (RIP) to enable the routers at each end of the VPN tunnel to exchange routing information with each other and with routers on their respective intranets. By default, RIP is not enabled on an RRAS router.

Membership in the local Administrators group, or equivalent, is the minimum required to complete this procedure.

To enable and configure RIP

  1. Open the Routing and Remote Access MMC snap-in.

  2. Expand the router name, and then expand IPv4.

  3. Right-click General, and then select New Routing Protocol.

  4. Select RIP Version 2 for Internet Protocol, and then click OK. RIP appears in the navigation pane under IPv4.

  5. Right-click RIP, and then click New Interface.

  6. Select the interface connected to a subnet on which the remote router is connected, and then click OK.

  7. RIP is configured with default settings. If these settings are satisfactory, click OK to save your changes. To configure additional RIP options for this interface, right-click the interface, and then click Properties.

  8. To customize logging or configure the list of routers with which this router can accept routing updates, right-click RIP, and then click Properties.
