Add a Unicast Neighbor

Although Routing Information Protocol (RIP) typically broadcasts or multicasts routing updates, it can also unicast these updates to specific RIP routers known as unicast neighbors. The ability to unicast RIP routing updates supports non-broadcast networks, such as Frame Relay. If a router interface is connected to a Frame Relay network, you must configure the interface to unicast RIP routing updates. This ensures that RIP traffic is received by all of the appropriate endpoints on the Frame Relay network.
To add a unicast neighbor
Membership in the local Administrators group, or equivalent, is the minimum required to complete this procedure.
Open the Routing and Remote Access MMC snap-in.
In the console tree, expand the router name, expand IPv4, and then select RIP.
In the details pane, right-click the interface on which you want to configure unicast neighbors, and then click Properties.
On the Neighbors tab, do one of the following:
To disable the use of neighboring routers, select Use broadcast or multicast only. This is the default setting.
To use neighboring routers in addition to broadcast or multicast, select Use neighbors in addition to broadcast or multicast.
To use only unicast neighboring routers to transmit routing updates, select Use neighbors instead of broadcast or multicast. Select this option if you have a non-broadcast network such as Frame Relay and want to enable RIP between routers.

The option you select applies to each unicast neighboring router that you create. For more information, see RIP-for-IP Routed Network Design in the RRAS Design Guide.
If you chose to use one or more unicast neighboring routers, in the IP address box, type the IP address of a unicast neighbor, and then click Add. You must add each neighbor separately.
Click OK.
