Configure Encryption for Dial-up Access

Updated: April 30, 2010

Applies To: Windows Server 2008, Windows Server 2008 R2

Use Network Policy Server (NPS) to set the appropriate encryption level for dial-up access. When using NPS, the remote access network policy (formerly named remote access policy) governs connections for remote access on the dial-up remote access server.

In the network policy for dial-up connections to the dial-up remote access server, select one of the following encryption levels:

  • To use Microsoft Point-to-Point Encryption (MPPE) with a 40-bit key, select Basic encryption.

  • To use MPPE with a 56-bit key, select Strong encryption.

  • To use MPPE with a 128-bit key, select Strongest encryption.
