Agent '%1' caused an unhandled exception '%2: %3' while handling event '%4'

Explanation

This Warning event indicates that the transport agent referenced in the event description has encountered an unhandled exception while handling the SMTP event.

Transport agents let you install custom software created by Microsoft, by third-party vendors, or by your organization, on to servers running Microsoft Exchange Server 2010. This software can then process e-mail messages that pass through the transport pipeline on a Hub Transport server or Edge Transport server. Custom transport agents provide additional functionality to Exchange 2010, such as anti-spam or antivirus programs, or any transport function that your organization may require.

Transport agents are typically installed automatically as part of applications that are designed to function together with Exchange 2010. However, there may be instances where organizations want to develop their own transport agents to manage mail that flows through their Exchange 2010 organization

For more information about transport agents and SMTP events, see Understanding Transport Agents.

User Action

If this warning frequently occurs, try one or more of the following:

  • Resolve your issue by using self-support options, assisted support options, and other resources. You can access these resources from the Exchange Server Solutions Center. From this page, click Self-Support Options in the navigation pane to use self-help options. Self-help options include searching the Microsoft Knowledge Base, posting a question at the Exchange Server forums, and other methods. Alternatively, in the navigation pane, you can click Assisted Support Options to contact a Microsoft support professional. Because your organization may have a specific procedure for directly contacting Microsoft Product Support Services, be sure to review your organization's guidelines first.

  • Contact the third-party vendor who supports the respective transport agent if the transport agent is not created by Microsoft.

For More Information

If you are not already doing so, consider running the Exchange tools, which have been created to help you analyze and troubleshoot your Exchange environment. These tools can help make sure that your configuration aligns with Microsoft best practices. They can also help you identify and resolve performance issues and improve mail flow. To run these tools, go to the Toolbox node of the Exchange Management Console. To learn more about these tools, see Managing Tools in the Toolbox.
