The Microsoft Exchange Transport Log Search service failed to create message tracking log directory: %1 because of error: %2

Explanation

This Error event indicates the Microsoft Exchange Transport Log Search service couldn't create the message tracking log directory.

The Microsoft Exchange Transport Log Search service is used by the Get-MessageTrackingLog and Search-MessageTrackingReport cmdlets in the Exchange Management Shell, the Delivery Reports tool in the Exchange Control Panel, and the Tracking Log Explorer tool in the Exchange Management Console to search the message tracking logs on the Hub Transport server, Edge Transport server, or Mailbox server.

The location of the message tracking logs is controlled by the MessageTrackingLogPath parameter on the Set-TransportServer cmdlet or the Set-MailboxServer cmdlet. By default, the message tracking logs are located at C:\Program Files\Microsoft\Exchange Server\V14\TransportRoles\Logs\MessageTracking.

If the specified tracking log directory doesn't already exist on a Hub Transport or Edge Transport server, the Microsoft Exchange Transport service creates the new message tracking log directory and applies the correct permissions. On a Mailbox server, the Microsoft Exchange Mail Submission service creates the new message tracking log directory.

If there is a problem with the Microsoft Exchange Transport service on Hub Transport servers or Edge Transport servers, or the Microsoft Exchange Mail Submission service on Mailbox servers, the Microsoft Exchange Transport Log Search service can also create the message tracking log directory when the service is started or a message tracking log search is performed.

User Action

To resolve this error do one or more of the following:

  • Verify the Microsoft Exchange Transport service and the Microsoft Mail Submission service are not stopped or in an unresponsive state. Restart the services if necessary.

  • Set the following permissions at the location that is specified by the MessageTrackingLogPath parameter on the Set-TransportServer cmdlet or the Set-MailboxServer cmdlet:

    • Administrators: Full Control

    • System: Full Control

    • Network Service:Modify, Delete Subfolders and Files
