Failed to generate offline address book, error '%1'

Explanation

This Error event may be triggered by multiple causes. Similarly, the method by which you resolve this error varies greatly depending on what triggered this event in your particular Exchange organization.

This error is generated while the System Attendant is in the data-gathering phase. The data-gathering phase consists of reading Active Directory for the distinguished name of the offline address book (OAB), determining the version number, and determining whether to write to disk or to a public folder. This failure occurs before any attempt to generate the OAB.

User Action

To resolve this error, do one of more of the following:

  • Review the System and Application event logs for related events. For example, events that occur immediately before and after this event may provide more information about the root cause of this error.

  • Resolve your issue by using self-support options, assisted support options, and other resources. You can access these resources from the Exchange Server Solutions Center. From this page, click Self-Support Options in the navigation pane to use self-help options. Self-help options include searching the Microsoft Knowledge Base, posting a question at the Exchange Server forums, and other methods. Alternatively, in the navigation pane, you can click Assisted Support Options to contact a Microsoft support professional. Because your organization may have a specific procedure for directly contacting Microsoft Product Support Services, be sure to review your organization's guidelines first.

  • Contact Microsoft Product Support. At this point, an error will most likely require debugging the Microsoft Exchange System Attendant process. For more information about how to contact support, visit the Contact Us page of the Microsoft Help and Support Web site.
