Publish Final Topology and Remove Last Front End

Topic Last Modified: 2011-04-12

When replication has completed between the Central Management Server and the computers in the deployment, you can remove the Central Management Server and retire it along with the other computers. You begin the final step of the process by publishing a completely empty topology document, which also cleans up the final Active Directory entries for the Central Management Server.

To publish the empty topology document

  1. Log on to the computer where Lync Server Management Shell is installed as a member of the Domain Admins group or the RTCUniversalServerAdmins group.

  2. Start the Lync Server Management Shell: Click Start, click All Programs, click Microsoft Lync Server 2010, and then click Lync Server Management Shell.

  3. Type: Publish-CsTopology -FinalizeUninstall

You may need to use the following parameters, based on your topology:

    • GlobalCatalog   Fully qualified domain name (FQDN) of a global catalog server in your domain. This parameter is not required if you are running Publish-CsTopology on a computer with an account in your domain.

    • GlobalSettingsDomainController   FQDN of a domain controller where global settings are stored. If global settings are stored in the System container in Active Directory Domain Services (AD DS), this parameter must point to the root domain controller. If global settings are stored in the Configuration container, you can use any domain controller and you do not have to use this parameter.

  4. If you see the prompt When you delete an application or external server, you delete all configuration state for the hosted application. Do you want to continue?, press Y (or press Enter) to confirm and proceed, or type N to stop the command from running.

To remove the last Front End Server in the topology

  1. Click Start, click Run, and then type: Stop-CsWindowsService

  2. If Internet Information Server (IIS) is installed and a message appears indicating that IIS may still be running, type net stop w3svc, and then press Enter.

  3. Click Start, click Run, and then type: cmd.exe

  4. From the drive where Program Files is located, type cd\%programfiles%\ Microsoft Lync Server 2010\Deployment, and then type: bootstrapper /scorch

    Important

Bootstrapper removes files and settings, preparing the Front End Server for removal. By default, bootstrapper.exe is located in %program files%\Microsoft Lync Server 2010\Deployment. You need to run the bootstrapper /scorch command because replication has stopped. The command removes the final references and files from the decommissioned Front End Server.

  5. When the bootstrapper.exe has finished, review the log file, which is in the following form: Log file was: %TEMP%\Bootstrap-CsMachine-[2011_03_120][12_15_31].html.
