Modifying the Configuration of a Virtual Disk
Applies To: Microsoft iSCSI Software Target
After you create an iSCSI virtual disk, you can change iSCSI target access for the virtual disk and modify other properties to manage how the disk is used and maintained. You can view and configure the following properties:
General
You can change the description and view characteristics of the virtual disk, such as the logical unit number (LUN) (if applicable), the size, and the local path. You can also use the Enable option to temporarily take the virtual disk offline and then bring it back online. For more information about enabling and disabling a virtual disk see Taking a Virtual Disk Offline Temporarily.
Note
The option to change the LUN of a virtual disk is only available when you view the virtual disk Properties from the Devices node in the Microsoft iSCSI Software Target console.
Target Access
You can add or remove iSCSI targets that can access the virtual disk. For more information about iSCSI targets, see Assigning a Virtual Disk to an iSCSI Target.
Disk Access
You can view the mount status and any mount points for the virtual disk. For more information about mounting a virtual disk for local access, see Mounting a Virtual Disk Locally.
Snapshots
You can create a snapshot of the virtual disk in its current state, delete a snapshot, roll back the virtual disk to a snapshot, or export a snapshot to make it available to one or more iSCSI targets. Snapshot Storage
You can change the storage drive and the maximum storage size. You can also view the used storage size and which virtual disks share the shadow storage. For more information about managing storage size, see Maintaining and Deleting Snapshots.
Note
Snapshots are taken of the entire NTFS volume, not an individual virtual disk. Ensure that the size and location that you specify is sufficient to enable ongoing snapshots of all virtual disks on the volume.
Warning
When you change the snapshot storage location for an existing volume, the source volume and all virtual disks within that volume are taken offline temporarily while the change occurs. You should make sure that all virtual drives and volumes that could be affected are not in use before you complete the move. As a best practice, schedule such a storage location move during low-use or off hours when the volumes and virtual drives can be taken offline without issue.
Membership in the local Administrators group, or equivalent, is the minimum required to complete this procedure. Review the details in "Additional considerations" in this topic.
To modify the configuration of a virtual disk
In Microsoft iSCSI Software Target, in the console tree, click Target. You can also modify the configuration of a virtual disk by using the Devices node.
In the results pane, right-click the virtual disk that you want to configure, and then click Properties.
In the Properties dialog box, change the settings of the properties that you want to modify, and then click OK.
Additional considerations
You must be a member of the local Administrators group to perform these tasks.
To open iSCSI Software Target, click Start, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Microsoft iSCSI Software Target. (Another way to open iSCSI Software Target is to click Start, click Run, and then type iscsitarget.msc.)
