Technical Requirements for Director

Topic Last Modified: 2011-06-27

This section details the hardware and software requirements for Director, and the supported collocation scenarios for Director.

Hardware Requirements for Director

The following table lists the hardware requirements for Director, which are the same as for many other server roles in Microsoft Lync Server 2010.

Hardware Requirements for Director

Hardware component Minimum requirement

CPU

  • 64-bit processor, quad-core, 2.0 GHz or higher

  • 64-bit dual processor, dual-core, 2.0 GHz or higher

Memory

4 gigabytes (GB)

Disk

  • 10K RPM hard disk drive (HDD)

  • High-performance solid state drive (SSD) with performance equal to or better than 10K RPM HDD

  • 2x RAID 10 (striped and mirrored) 15K RPM disks for database data files

Network

  • Dual 1 gigabit per second (Gbps) network adapters (recommended)

  • Single 1 Gbps network adapter (supported)

Software Requirements for Director

The Director server role can be deployed only on servers running Lync Server 2010 Enterprise Edition.

One of the following 64-bit operating systems is required for all roles of Lync Server 2010 Enterprise Edition, including Front End Server, A/V Conferencing Server, Director, Mediation Server, Edge Server, Archiving Server, and Monitoring Server:

  • The Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard operating system

  • The Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise operating system

  • The Windows Server 2008 R2 Datacenter operating system

  • The Windows Server 2008 Standard operating system with Service Pack 2 (SP2)

  • The Windows Server 2008 Enterprise operating system with SP2

  • The Windows Server 2008 Datacenter operating system with SP2

Note

To deploy Lync Server 2010 on a computer that is running either the Windows Server 2008 R2 Datacenter operating system or the Windows Server 2008 Datacenter operating system with Service Pack 2 (SP2) and that is configured for multiple processor groups (dynamic hardware partitioning), you must upgrade Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Express database software, which is installed by default when you install Lync Server 2010, to Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 Express. The SQL instance name is RTC for a Standard Edition server back-end database and RTCLocal for the local configuration store (on each server role). A server running Lync Server 2010 Standard Edition has both SQL instances, and each needs to be upgraded separately.

Supported Collocation

The Director server role cannot be collocated with any other server role in Lync Server 2010.
