IFilter and file type reference (FAST Search Server 2010 for SharePoint)

FAST Search Server 2010

Applies to: FAST Search Server 2010

Topic Last Modified: 2011-07-22

After content is crawled (either through the FAST Search Content SSA or by using a FAST Search specific connector), the items are submitted to Microsoft FAST Search Server 2010 for SharePoint for item processing. IFilters are used to extract content and metadata from the crawled content.

If you want to index a file type that is not supported by an IFilter that is provided with FAST Search Server 2010 for SharePoint, you should inspect the Crawl Log to determine the necessary steps. For more information and procedures, see Include a file type in the content index (FAST Search Server 2010 for SharePoint).

If you crawl a file type without a registered filter, only the file properties are included in the index and not the actual content of the item. In this case, the index will only contain the metadata properties of the file in the content repository, for example the date the file was created or the title of the file.

The following table lists the file types that are supported out-of-the-box by FAST Search Server 2010 for SharePoint.

File name extension:

.html (and all other HTML files, regardless of file name extension)

.ppsx (support for this format requires that you have installed Microsoft Office 2010 Filter Pack Service Pack 1)

.txt (and all other plain text files, regardless of file name extension)

The following table lists the file types that are not crawled by default. You can view the list of excluded file types by looking at the Manage File Types page in the Microsoft SharePoint Server 2010 Central Administration.
