Installing FPSMC on a Backup Server

Before you install Microsoft Forefront Protection Server Management Console (FPSMC), all minimum system requirements must be met. For more information, see Verifying System Requirements.

To install FPSMC, you must have Domain Admin privileges.

Before you can install a backup server you must have first already deployed a primary FPSMC server with an Enterprise installation. The backup server must be deployed in the same domain as the primary server. The backup server cannot be installed on the same server as the primary server.

You can choose either the Express or Enterprise installation options for a backup server. If you select an Enterprise installation, the backup database server can be the same server as the primary database server; however, the backup server will create separate databases.

Prior to installing a backup server, you must have the password you specified when installing the primary server and the credentials you used to access the primary database server. The password and credentials provided to the primary and backup servers must match to replicate data between the primary and backup servers. You must also export the FPSMC certificate from the primary server and import it to the backup server. This certificate is named fpsmc and is located in the following folder: Program Files\Microsoft Forefront Security\Server\Server Management\Services\Deploy Agent\.

To install FPSMC on a backup server using the Express installation

  1. Double-click the setup.exe file to launch the Setup wizard.

  2. Click Next on the Welcome page to proceed with the installation.

  3. Select Backup under Server Roles.

  4. Input and confirm the password you specified when installing the primary server, and then click Next.

  5. Click Browse, select the FPSMC certificate, and then click Next.

  6. Confirm that the Express option is selected and click Check Prerequisites. If a pop-up appears listing prerequisites to install, click Yes to install them. If SQL Server 2008 R2 Express (FPSMCDB instance) has not been installed on the server you must accept the SQL Server Express end-user license agreement.

  7. If Microsoft Chart Controls for .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 is not already installed on the server, you must manually install it before you can continue. To install Microsoft Chart Controls for .NET Framework 3.5 SP1, see Microsoft Chart Controls for Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 (https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=202816).

    Note

FPSMC automatically installs the following prerequisites: Internet Information Services (IIS), .NET Framework 3.5 SP1, and SQL Server 2008 R2 Express.

  8. Select or enter the name of the primary database server in the Primary Database Server drop-down menu.

  9. Enter the same credentials in the NT Domain, User, and Password fields that you used when installing the Primary Server.

  10. Click Test Logon, and then click Next.

  11. In the Use Microsoft Update to help keep your computer secure and up-to-date dialog box, select whether you want to use Microsoft Update when you check for updates and click Next. When you opt-in to Microsoft Update, updates are enabled for all Microsoft products on the server. If the update schedule is already configured, Setup may skip this step. If the update schedule is not already configured, it is enabled to download and notify you of product updates.

  12. On the End User License Agreement page, review the licensing terms and select I accept the terms in the License Agreement, and then click Next.

  13. On the Select installation folder page accept the default folder or click Browse to select a different location for the folder. This is the folder into which the executable files are placed. Click Next.
