Associate hyperlinks

Associating a hyperlink tells MapPoint which hyperlink you want called from the map or from a Web page saved from the map when the pushpin balloon is not open. You can have multiple hyperlinks in a pushpin balloon, but only one can be uniquely associated with a pushpin.

  1. In the Legend and overview pane, under Pushpins, select a pushpin set.

  2. On the Data menu, click Data set properties, and then click the Hyperlink tab.

  3. Do one of the following:

Use hyperlinks that you manually add to balloons

    • Click Use hyperlinks that you add to pushpin balloon notes.

Note  If MapPoint detects more than one hyperlink in the note section of a balloon, only the first hyperlink is associated.

Use hyperlinks from your imported data

    1. Click Use hyperlinks from your imported data.

    2. Select the column heading that contains the hyperlinks that you want to associate.

Use hyperlinks that MapPoint automatically generates

    1. Click Have MapPoint automatically create a set of hyperlinks.

    2. If you haven't done so already, in the hyperlink box, type a name for a hyperlink template. Use an asterisk (*) as a placeholder for the place name associated with each data point.

For example, if the data is mapped by city as the geographic unit and you type https://www.msn.com/\*.htm (where * indicates the city name) in the hyperlink box, MapPoint will create the following hyperlink for data mapped in Boston: https://www.msn.com/Boston%20MA.htm. MapPoint will create similar hyperlinks for every city in the pushpin set.

    3. Verify that the hyperlink is correct by looking at the hyperlink that appears in the Sample hyperlink box, and modify the hyperlink template, if necessary.

The sample hyperlink is based on the mapped data.

Tip  You can also indicate display text, a bookmark, and a ScreenTip for automatically generated hyperlinks by using the following format:

      DisplayName#Hyperlink#Bookmark#ScreenTip#

For example, if you type Click Here#https://www.microsoft.com/##Link to Microsoft Web site# in the hyperlink box, the text that appears in the pushpin balloon is Click Here, the hyperlink address is https://www.microsoft.com/, and the ScreenTip on a saved Web page for the pushpin is Link to Microsoft Web site.

Note  The double number sign (##) in the string in this example indicates that no bookmark is set.

ScreenTips appear only when the map is saved as a Web page, not from the map file in MapPoint.

Stop using hyperlinks for a pushpin set

    • Click Do not use hyperlinks for this set.

Note  There may be circumstances in which you do not want to associate hyperlinks with a pushpin set. For example, if you have multiple mapped pushpin sets, each with hyperlinks, you may want to stop using the hyperlinks for some of the sets before saving your map as a Web page.

  4. Click OK.

Tip  To follow a hyperlink from the map without opening the balloon, press CTRL while clicking the pushpin symbol. This is a good way to check hyperlinks before saving a map as a Web page.
