Completing the Getting Started tasks

Applies To: Windows Storage Server 2008 R2 Essentials

The Home page of the Windows Storage Server 2008 R2 Essentials Dashboard lists the Getting Started tasks, which you should complete immediately after you install your server. By performing these tasks, you can help protect information that is stored on the server and enable the features that are available in Windows Storage Server 2008 R2 Essentials.

If you choose not to perform the Getting Started tasks, users might not have access to some network features. To run these tasks later, return to the Windows Storage Server 2008 R2 Essentials Dashboard Home page.

The following table defines each of the items that can appear in the list of Getting Started tasks.

Task Description

Get updates for other Microsoft products

Click this task configure Microsoft Update settings.

Set up server backup

Click this task to run the Set Up Server Backup Wizard, which helps you set up and schedule routine backups of your server and data.

Set up Remote Web Access

Click this task to run the Turn on Remote Web Access Wizard. This wizard helps you set up your router, domain name and website.

Set options for sharing

Click this task to set or change the way that users can access shared resources on the server, and to change the password policy for user accounts.

Configure Media settings

Click this task to open the Media settings page of the Server Settings window. From this page you can turn Media server on or off, adjust the quality of video streaming, and customize the shared folders that are included in the media library.

Learn about centralized storage

Click this task to access links to Help topics that describe the various centralized storage features of Windows Storage Server 2008 R2 Essentials.

Set up alert email notification

Click this task to enable email notification of server alerts, and to specify one or more email addresses to which you want to send alert notifications.
