Reinstall the Mailbox Server Role in Windows Small Business Server 2011 Standard

Warning

You should only uninstall or reinstall the Mailbox Server Role as a last option. Before you uninstall or reinstall the Mailbox Server Role, you should troubleshoot issues in the related software and services, and try to isolate the root cause of the issue. If you are unable to determine and correct the root cause, you may be able to fix the issue by restoring the server from a good backup.

To verify whether the Mailbox Server Role is already installed

  1. Click Start, click Control Panel, click Programs, and then click Programs and Features.

  2. Click Microsoft Exchange Server 2010, and then click Change.

  3. On the User Account Control page, click Continue.

  4. In the Exchange Maintenance Mode dialog box, click Next.

  5. In Server Role Selection, if the Mailbox Role check box is shaded or selected, the role is installed. Otherwise, it is not installed.

  6. Click Cancel to close the wizard.

To uninstall the Mailbox Server Role

  1. Click Start, click Control Panel, click Programs, and then click Programs and Features.

  2. Click Microsoft Exchange Server 2010, and then click Uninstall.

  3. On the User Account Control page, click Continue.

  4. In the Exchange Maintenance Mode dialog box, click Next.

  5. In Server Role Selection, click the Mailbox Role to clear the check box, and then click Next.

  6. On the Readiness Checks page, view the status to determine if the organization and server role prerequisite checks completed successfully. If the prerequisites checks did not complete successfully, review the Summary page to help troubleshoot and fix any issues that are preventing Setup from completing. If the checks have completed successfully, click Uninstall to remove the Mailbox Server Role.

  7. On the Completion page, click Finish.

To reinstall the Mailbox Server Role in Windows Small Business Server 2011 Standard

  1. Create a registry value to use with Windows SBS 2011 Standard Disc 2 (Component Technologies for Server Repair) and Microsoft Exchange Server 2010 by doing the following:

    1. Open Registry Editor.

Warning

Incorrectly editing the registry may severely damage your system. Before making changes to the registry, you should back up any valued data on the computer. 

2.  On the **User Account Control** page, click **Continue**.  
      
3.  Navigate to HKEY\_LOCAL\_MACHINE\\SOFTWARE\\Classes\\Installer\\Products\\ AE1D439464EB1B8488741FFA028E291C\\SourceList\\Media.  
      
4.  To create a new string value named MediaPackage, right-click **Media**, click **New**, and click **String Value**; in **Name**, type **MediaPackage**, and then press ENTER.  
      
5.  Double-click **MediaPackage**; in **Edit String**, in **Value data**, type **\\CMPNENTS\\EXCHANGE14\_SP1\\**, and then click **OK**.  
      
6.  Close Registry Editor.

  1. Rename the C:\Program Files\Microsoft\Exchange Server\v14\Mailbox\Mailbox Database folder to Mailbox Database OLD.

  2. Rename the C:\Program Files\Microsoft\Exchange Server\v14\Mailbox\Public Folder Database <nnnnn> folder to Public Folder Database <nnnnn>_OLD, where <nnnnn> refers to the numeric characters that appear as part of the folder name.

  3. Install the Mailbox Server Role by doing the following:

    1. Click Start, click Control Panel, click Programs, and then click Programs and Features.

    2. Click Microsoft Exchange Server 2010, and then click Change.

    3. On the User Account Control page, click Continue.

    4. In the Exchange Maintenance Mode dialog box, click Next.

    5. In Server Role Selection, select Mailbox Role, and then insert Windows SBS 2011 Standard Disc 2 (Component Technologies for Server Repair).

    6. In Specify the path for the Exchange Server installation files, click Browse.

    7. Click <DVD Drive>:\CMPNENTS\EXCHANGE14_SP1, where <DVD Drive> is the name of your media drive, click OK, and then click Next.

    8. In the Client Settings page, select “Yes”.

    9. In the Readiness Checks dialog box, click Install.

Note

The installation might take several minutes. 

10. When the installation completes, click **Finish**.  
      
11. Restart the server.
