Three-Tier Physical Deployment Topology

A three-tier Microsoft Commerce Server 2009 R2 deployment consists of a presentation tier, an application tier, and a data tier.

Web servers in the presentation tier host the commerce application code and commerce presentation software component (such as Web parts for a Microsoft SharePoint 2010 commerce application). In a three-tier configuration, the commerce application accesses the Commerce Foundation by sending service requests to the application tier. The Commerce Foundation Web application is a client of the Commerce Foundation deployed in the application tier.

The application tier hosts Commerce Foundation and the commerce runtime. The Commerce Foundation exposes service endpoints to which the presentation tier forwards commerce requests.

The data tier hosts Commerce Server 2009 R2 databases either on a single SQL Server instance or on clustered instances of SQL Server.

The following physical topology diagram provides an example of a three-tier commerce SharePoint 2010 deployment.
