Copy DISM to Another Computer

Applies To: Windows 8, Windows 8.1, Windows Server 2012, Windows Server 2012 R2

You can use deployment and imaging tools on a supported host operating system, such as Windows PE 3.0, even if you cannot install Windows ADK. You can copy the tools from a Windows ADK installation on your technician computer and configure the tools for use on a supported host computer.

To install DISM tools

  1. Install the Windows ADK on a technician computer.

  2. Copy the DISM folder for the appropriate architecture from the technician computer to the host computer. The architecture of the tools must match the native architecture of the operating system on the host computer.

By default, the deployment and imaging tools are installed to the Windows ADK path: C:\Program Files (x86)\Windows Kits\8.1\Assessment and Deployment Kit\Deployment Tools\, in Windows 8.1, and C:\Program Files (x86)\Windows Kits\8.0\Assessment and Deployment Kit\Deployment Tools\, in Windows 8.

The DISM tools are installed under the ADK path in the <architecture>\DISM folder.

Important

If an older version of the deployment and imaging tools is already installed on the host computer, do not overwrite the files from this installation in the system32 folder. Instead, create a new folder on the host computer to copy the Windows ADK files into.

  1. Run WimMountAdkSetupAmd64.exe or WimMountAdkSetupX86.exe on the supported host computer. For example, at a command prompt, type the following:

    D:\ADK\WimMountAdkSetupAmd64.exe /Install /q
