Import the Monitoring Packs

For information on how to import a monitoring pack, or any type of management pack, see How to Import an Operations Manager Management Pack in the Operations Manager Operations Guide.

Best Practice: Create a Management Pack for Customizations

By default, Operations Manager saves all customizations such as overrides to the Default Management Pack. As a best practice, you should instead create a separate management pack for each sealed management pack you want to customize.

When you create a management pack for the purpose of storing customized settings for a sealed management pack, it is helpful to base the name of the new management pack on the name of the management pack that it is customizing, such as “Biztalk Server 2006 Customizations”.

Creating a new management pack for storing customizations of each sealed management pack makes it easier to export the customizations from a test environment to a production environment. It also makes it easier to delete a management pack, because you must delete any dependencies before you can delete a management pack. If customizations for all management packs are saved in the Default Management Pack and you need to delete a single management pack, you must first delete the Default Management Pack, which also deletes customizations to other management packs.

Note

By default, when you create a management pack object, disable a rule or monitor, or create an override, Operations Manager saves the setting to the Default Management Pack. As a best practice, you should create a separate management pack for each sealed management pack you want to customize, rather than saving your customized settings to the Default Management Pack. For more information, see Customizing Management Packs (https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=140601).

Security Configuration

This monitoring pack does not include any Run As profiles. You will have to create a Run As profile as part of using the WS-Management and SMASH Device Discovery Template.

Note

Only simple or windows authentication modes work when creating a Run As profile as part of this template.

WS-Management and SMASH Device Discovery Template

Discovery and monitoring of SMASH enabled devices occurs through the use of the WS-Management and SMASH Device Discovery Template. See the procedure for enabling SMASH device monitoring in Using the WS-Management and SMASH Device Discovery Template for instructions on using the template.

Cleaning Up SMASH Devices from Deleted Templates

If the user deletes the template, the monitored SMASH compliant devices associated with that template are not cleaned immediately. A rule runs every hour to clean up devices. There is also a selection in the WS-Management Device Tasks navigation pane to clean them up: Clean up SMASH devices from deleted templates.

Tip

Best Practice: Because devices are not removed automatically when templates are deleted, as a best practice you should remove the devices from monitoring within the template prior to deleting the template.

Editing the WS-Management and SMASH Device Discovery Template

After initial creation, you may want to edit the template to add or remove devices, change the resource pool from which the SMASH enabled devices will be monitored, or change credentials.

Editing the discovery template

  1. Open the Operations console, and then in the navigation pane, click the Authoring button.

  2. In the Authoring navigation pane, under the Management Pack Templates, select WS-Management and Smash Device Discovery to view a list of management packs previously created using the WS-Management and SMASH Device Discovery Template.

  3. Select the template you want to edit and then in the Tasks pane click Properties.

  4. Through the various tabs of the Properties window, you can modify the Template Name and Description, change resource pools in the Specify the target tab, change Credentials by editing the Run As account, or add and remove Devices.

  5. When you have completed editing the template, on the Summary tab, confirm the devices you want to monitor are in the list of devices to either add or remove.
