Lync Voice Features
Lync-to-Phone
The Lync-to-phone capability enables Lync Online users to make calls to, and receive calls from, the traditional phone network. Users can call any phone number using a PC, with full support for Lync-optimized PC peripherals such as speakerphones or headsets. Phone numbers can be assigned or ported to Lync Online users. Lync-to-phone provides a single work number experience across users’ devices that are running Lync, including laptops, smartphones, and tablets. The “call via work” feature means that users can initiate outgoing calls from their smartphone or tablet while displaying the Lync work number to outside parties. With Lync-to-phone, the calling experience becomes integrated with the other components of unified communications, including instant messaging, presence, video calling, and web conferencing.
Important
- The Lync-to-phone functionality requires the purchase of a separate calling service from a qualified Office 365 partner for connectivity to the public phone network. The first qualified partner service is Jajah Voice for Office 365, available in the US and UK initially. See Jajah Voice for Office 365.
- Lync-to-phone does not provide interoperability with your on-premises PBX and SIP trunking voice systems.
Lync-to-phone does not provide the following features: WAN bandwidth management (CAC), response groups, branch-site resiliency.
- Call via work on smart phones and tablets requires the Lync clients to be installed on the device.
- After you purchase the calling service from Jajah (including phone number and calling plans), use the Lync Online control panel to allocate phone numbers and manage calling policies for your Lync-to-phone users.
Access to Exchange Online Voice Mail
Voice mail, transcription, and auto attendant capabilities are available through Exchange Online voice mail. Access to these capabilities requires the appropriate license to Exchange Online. Call Controls
While on a call, a user can answer additional incoming calls or initiate outgoing calls, and the existing active call is automatically put on hold. Calls can be transferred from one user to another, either directly or after the first user speaks privately with the second user. Users can also transfer calls to another device; for example, they could transfer an active call to their mobile phone as they walk out the door of their office. Call control features available to Lync users include the following:
- Call hold and retrieve
- Set incoming calls to simultaneously ring your mobile phone (find me/follow me).
- During a call, transfer from the PC to your mobile phone or any other number or user.
- Drag-and-drop conference calling—create an ad-hoc audio conference by dialing phone numbers or dragging contacts into an existing Lync Meeting or call.
Delegation
Delegation enables users to delegate call handling to one or more assistants. The delegate can perform multiple calling tasks on behalf of the user, including screening calls, placing calls, and initiating conferences.
Team Calling
Team calling enables a user to have incoming calls simultaneously ring the phones of teammates, for functions such as group call pickup and department calling.
Emergency Dialing
Emergency dialing (911, 112, and so on) may be provided by third party carriers. The Lync Enhanced 9-1-1 (E9-1-1) feature, which associates the calling party’s telephone number with a street address, is available to Lync Server customers in the United States, but is not available to Lync Online customers.
