How to: Set a Variable for an SAP NetWeaver BI MDX Query (Report Designer)

New: 14 April 2006

Filtering data from an SAP NetWeaver Business Intelligence data source is accomplished through the use of variables defined on the data source as part of a Query cube definition. Variables are defined on the data source at the time the Query cube is created.

To view existing variables and assign static values to a variable, use the Variables dialog box. You can display the Variables dialog box in the following way:

  • In Data view, from the graphical query designer in query mode, drag existing variables from the Variables pane onto the Query pane.

Note

The Variables dialog box does not automatically populate the valid values list for the parameter.

Procedures

To define a variable in a query designer in design view

  1. In Data view, from the graphical query designer in design mode, select a Query cube from the cube drop-down list.

  2. Click the Variables (Icon for the Query Parameters dialog box) button on the toolbar.

This button is enabled only for Query cubes, not InfoCubes.

  3. In Query Parameters, for Parameter, type the name of the parameter.

    Note

This must match the name of the parameter specified in the query. Do not include the at (@) symbol. You must specify one parameter for each parameter in the query.

  4. For Value, type a default value for the parameter.

    Note

This value is used in the Results view of the designer. If the query parameter is associated with a report parameter, you can change the default value of the report parameter independently of this value.

  5. Use the up and down arrow buttons to move a parameter up or down in the list, and the delete (X) button to remove a parameter from the list.

  6. Click OK.
