IP Phones

Microsoft plans to test and certify IP phones for Skype for Business through the Skype for Business Certification Program. This reflects an evolution from the previous basic interop compatibility (“Compatible with Lync”) to a higher quality bar, including metrics targeting higher reliability. Phone vendors are actively working to meet this higher bar and will be qualifying against the new requirements starting the end of this calendar year. In addition, our partners are currently working to provide support for the Skype for Business Online service that will be released later this year.

In the meantime Skype for Business Server supports backwards compatibility with all of our Lync qualified IP phones, and devices which are supported for Skype for Business Online will be announced as soon as they are qualified.

USB audio and video devices

The USB certification program ensures that USB peripherals such as headsets, speakerphones, webcams, and monitors, offer rich audio or video quality. Supporting plug & play features with Lync and Skype for Business clients, passing products provide a great experience for end-users and administrators.

End-User Experience

  • Automatic selection of default audio device and prioritization if multiple audio peripherals are present
  • Plug and play: once connected, a device registers on the Skype for Business client and is ready to use
  • Basic call control across PC and devices with answer/hang-up, mute/unmute, and volume control.
  • Audio quality (embedded in the device): no echo or excessive glitches, echo cancellation across devices, wideband audio
  • Video quality: Noise, color, image detail, jitter, latency, frame rate, field of view

Administrator Experience

All of these specifications apply equally for Lync 2013 as they do for Skype for Business, hence all USB peripherals that are qualified for Lync 2013 are also certified for Skype for Business.

PCs

The PCs program ensures that workers can use their PCs as their complete unified communications endpoint. PCs empower workers to use all the tools and features of the platform without the need of any USB peripheral. Form factors tested include, all-in-one desktops, convertible tablets, laptops and monitors*.

All of these form factors are tested to deliver:

  • High-definition audio and optimal speaker and mic placement for conference calls.
  • Rich, crisp video, at a variety of resolutions, and with a wide field of view, so that video conferencing is easier and more useful.

All of these criteria apply equally for Skype for Business as they do for Lync 2013, hence all PCs that are qualified for Lync 2013 are also Certified for Skype for Business

* Monitors require an embedded camera and embedded speakerphone, both passing Lync Logo specs (including USB HID support). The display is not tested.

Meeting room devices and solutions

Microsoft tests and qualifies meeting room solutions for Lync, and moving forward, Skype for Business.

Skype for Business will support backwards compatibility with Optimized for Lync 2013 meeting room solutions.

These include:

  • Lync Room Systems
  • USB-based audio/video end points designed for conference rooms

In addition, Lync qualified third-party video equipment providers have the option to support their devices working with Skype for Business.

Lync Room Systems

Lync Room Systems (LRS) are designed to extend the Lync meeting experience to the conference room. A Lync Room System includes all the required hardware and Lync Room System Edition software. These products have been tested and are optimized for Lync.

Lync Room Systems will manage the Skype for Business transition in a two-stage approach. At general availability, Lync Room Systems will be forward compatible with the new Skype for Business Server product while maintaining the same client user experience. Meanwhile, LRS devices will continue to receive quarterly client updates. Once LRS re-branding is completed later in 2015, devices will make the final Skype for Business transition using the same regular update process on existing hardware and compatible with both Lync Server 2013 and Skype for Business Server. Microsoft will work closely with its OEM partners as it transitions to Certified for Skype for Business during this process. Finally, customers will be able to follow the transition process and update details via the Skype for Business team blog.
