Create a Management Agent

For this procedure, using Management Agent Designer, on the Create Management Agent page you select the type of management agent that you want to create. This page appears only when you create a new management agent. To complete this procedure, you must be logged on as a member of the FIMSyncAdmins security group.

To create a management agent

  1. On the Tools menu, click Management Agents.

  2. On the Actions menu, click Create.

  3. In Management Agent Designer, in Management agent type, click the type of management agent that you want to create.

  4. In Name, type a name for the management agent.

  5. In Description, type a description for the management agent.

  6. If you are creating a management agent for Extensible Connectivity, select one of the following in Architecture:

    • Process – Runs the management agent using the architecture of the server process.

    • x64 – Runs the management agent using 64-bit architecture.

    • x86 – Runs the management agent using 32-bit architecture. If you select this on a 64-bit server, it defaults to Run this management agent in a separate process, and the checkbox is disabled.

  7. Click Next, and then, follow the instructions for configuring additional pages in Management Agent Designer.

Warning

Do not run Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) scripts when you create a management agent. If you run WMI scripts when you create a management agent, you might cause a management agent run to fail or corrupt the management agent configuration.

Note

After you create a management agent, you can view the management agent's properties on the Properties page in Management Agent Designer

Note

Each type of management agent has unique configuration requirements. Management Agent Designer automatically presents the appropriate configuration pages for the management agent that you select.

Note

You cannot use the same name for two different management agents that are located on the same server running FIM. A valid management agent name can contain uppercase or lowercase letters A through Z, numbers, dash (-), underscore (_), period (.), comma (,), or space, and cannot be a reserved system file name. Other characters are not permitted.

Note

When you create a new management agent, Management Agent Designer creates a working folder with the same name as the management agent in the root directory, by default, C:\Program Files\Microsoft Forefront Identity Server\2010\Synchronization Service\MaData. The working folder contains custom data input files from the connected data sources that are associated with the management agent. If you delete a management agent, FIM deletes the associated working folder, unless the folder contains files. If the working folder contains files, FIM marks the working folder for manual deletion. If you change the name of a management agent, FIM changes name of the associated working folder.

Note

By default, the first time you create new management agent using Management Agent Designer, the new management agent is run in the same memory space as the Forefront Identity Manager 2010 R2 Synchronization Service. This improves overall performance by consuming less memory space, but if a management agent process fails, it might cause a disruption to the Forefront Identity Manager 2010 R2 Synchronization Service. After you create a management agent, you can change the management agent so that it is run in a separate memory space. This reduces the risk of a management agent process from affecting the Forefront Identity Manager 2010 R2 Synchronization Service, but it can decrease overall performance. To run a management agent in a separate process, in Management Agents, click a management agent. On the Actions menu, click Properties. In Management Agent Designer, click Properties, and then click Run this management agent in a separate process. By running a management agent in a separate memory space, you do not affect an associated rules extension that also runs in its own memory space.
