Disk Defragmenter Technical Reference

Defragmentation is the process of consolidating fragmented files and folders. Disk Defragmenter is a Microsoft Windows Server 2003 tool that analyzes storage areas on a disk, referred to as volumes, and consolidates fragmented files and folders so that each occupies a single, contiguous space on the volume. As a result, a system can access and save files and folders more efficiently. By consolidating files and folders, Disk Defragmenter also consolidates the free space on a volume, making it less likely that new files will be fragmented.

Disk Defragmenter can defragment volumes that are formatted with the FAT16, FAT32, and NTFS file systems. Windows Server 2003 offers two choices for defragmenting disks: the Disk Defragmenter snap-in and a new command-line version of the tool, Defrag.exe.
