Executive Summary

This security update resolves a vulnerability in Microsoft Windows. The vulnerability could allow a user with limited privileges on an affected system to leverage Task Scheduler to execute files that they do not have permissions to run. An attacker who successfully exploited this vulnerability could bypass access control list (ACL) checks and run privileged executables.

Vulnerability Information

Task Scheduler Security Feature Bypass Vulnerability - CVE-2015-0084

A security feature bypass vulnerability exists when Windows Task Scheduler fails to properly validate and enforce impersonation levels. The vulnerability could allow a user with limited privileges on an affected system to leverage Task Scheduler to execute files that they do not have permissions to run.

An attacker who successfully exploited this vulnerability could bypass ACL checks and run privileged executables. The update addresses the vulnerability by correcting how Task Scheduler validates impersonation levels.

Microsoft received information about this vulnerability through coordinated vulnerability disclosure. When this security bulletin was originally issued Microsoft had not received any information to indicate that this vulnerability had been publicly used to attack customers.

Mitigating Factors

Microsoft has not identified any mitigating factors for this vulnerability.

Workarounds

The following workarounds may be helpful in your situation:

  • Turn off the Task Scheduler service
    Note Modifying the Registry incorrectly can cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that problems resulting from incorrect modification of the Registry can be solved. Modify the Registry at your own risk.

    1. Open Registry Editor and navigate to HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Schedule
    2. Change the value of the Start key from 2 to 4 (disabled).
    3. Restart the system.

Impact of workaround. Scheduled tasks will no longer run.

How to undo the workaround.

  1. Open Registry Editor and navigate to HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Schedule
  2. Change the value of the Start key from 4 to 2 (enabled).
  3. Restart the system.
