Administration Feature Pack

Updated: December 19, 2002

The SMS Administration Feature Pack contains four tools: the Managed Site Accounts Tool, the Transfer Site Settings Wizard, the Elevated-Rights Deployment Tool, and the SMS Web Reporting Tool. For detailed information about each, please refer to the table below and the resources listed at right.

Note: International-language versions of the Administration Feature Pack are also available, localized in Chinese (Traditional and Simplified), French, German, Korean, and Japanese. You can access the version you require once you have completed the registration process.

This version of the SMS Administration Feature Pack should not be used on SMS 2003 site servers.

Feature Pack Contents

Manage Site Accounts Tool
DescriptionThe Manage Site Accounts Tool manages accounts and passwords in use by one or more sites in a hierarchy, as well as the associated domain updates.
  • Command-line and scripting interface with random password generation option
  • Enacts account and password updates for multiple sites in a single transaction
System requirements
  • SMS 2.0 SP3 or later
  • Windows NT® 4.0 SP6a or later (SMS Administrator console computers)
Deployment notesAfter installing the tool on a computer running the SMS Administrator console, access the tool using the Start menu program group and icon created by Setup. From the command prompt you can enter commands to update accounts and passwords for SMS accounts and services for one or many target sites (or just the local site). These changes will be processed in the background, and SMS will replicate the changes to each target site using its built-in replication features (just as if you made the changes on a single site using the SMS Administrator console without the Manage Site Accounts Tool). Scripts can easily be created to integrate the tool into larger scale management of accounts or for the rapid password updates needed in critical situations.

Transfer Site Settings Wizard

You can use the Transfer Site Settings Wizard to copy the settings from a source site to one or more target sites. Supported settings include site configuration, package, and collection settings.

  • Import and export configurations and settings from an XML file

  • Supports offline or inactive sites automatically

  • Command-line interface for ongoing transfers to enforce a settings policy

  • Changes are recorded in an audit trail of status messages

System requirements

  • SMS 2.0 SP3 or later

  • Windows NT 4.0 SP6a or later (SMS Administrator console computers)

  • MSXML 1.0 or later

Deployment notes

  1. Install this tool on a computer with the SMS Administrator console that you use to administer and configure your sites (both the source site and target sites need to be visible to the Wizard).

  2. Select the source site, settings, and target sites to be processed.

The Wizard will make the changes and, in the background, SMS will replicate the changes to each target site using its built-in replication features (just as if you made the changes on a single site using the SMS Administrator console without the Transfer Site Settings Wizard).

Elevated Rights Deployment Tool

The Elevated Rights Deployment Tool (also known as "RunOnce") helps you deploy applications which require local administrator rights after a system restart, such as:

  • Windows NT® 4.0 SP6a

  • Microsoft Office 2000 System File Update

  • Office XP System File Update

  • Migrates entries from the RunOnce registry back to SMS for managed execution

  • Provides status reporting for both the pre-boot and post-boot phase of installation

System requirements

  • SMS 2.0 SP3 or later

  • Windows NT 4.0 SP6a or later (SMS site server computers)

  • Windows NT 4.0 SP4 or later (SMS client computers)

Deployment notes

  1. Prepare the application to be deployed by placing it on a network share and identifying the setup program and command-line parameters that you would normally use to perform the deployment (for example, "nt4sp6.exe -q -z -m").

  2. Run the installation program for the Elevated Rights Deployment Tool and indicate the location of the network share, the setup program, and its command-line parameters.

Setup will create an SMS package, programs, program dependency settings and an advertisement that is preconfigured for you. Run this tool one time for each such application that requires elevated rights after a system restart (such as the Microsoft Office 2000 and Office XP System File Update). SMS will then install the application on computers that you make members of a testing Collection, allowing you to open the deployment more broadly.

SMS Web Reporting Tool

The SMS Web Reporting Tool provides both a general purpose reporting solution and many built-in reports based on the rich inventory data hosted by SMS.

  • Enterprise Agreement license True-up Reporting has been included to provide a simple and reliable way to report on installed applications

  • Ability to create custom reports and links to reports you need to share with others

  • Custom inventory reports can be created by using SQL Server views and the inventory schema

System requirements

  • MSXML 1.0 or later

  • Internet Information Services (IIS) 4.0 or later

  • Internet Explorer 5.01 or later (reporting client console)
