The Microsoft Deployment Toolkit (MDT) is the recommended process and toolset for automating Windows 8.1 deployment. It builds on top of the core deployment tools in the Windows Assessment and Deployment Kit with additional features designed to reduce the complexity and time required for deployment. In addition to facilitating standardized images, MDT enables you to more easily manage security and ongoing configurations.
Microsoft System Center 2012 R2 Configuration Manager can be used to deploy Windows 8.1 to computers that are managed by Configuration Manager, and to unmanaged computers using bootable media such as a CD set, DVD, or USB flash drives. We recommend that you utilize MDT when deploying Windows 8.1 with Configuration Manager as MDT 2013 adds approximately 280 enhancements to the Configuration Manager operating system deployment process.
While the Windows Assessment and Deployment Kit (Windows ADK) can be used to deploy Windows 8.1 to new computers; deploying Windows 8.1 using only the Windows ADK can be complicated and time consuming. We recommend instead that you use the Windows ADK to assess the compatibility of your applications, customize components of your deployment, and optimize the performance of your Windows machines.
