Server Requirements

500 or Fewer Clients

 

Processor

750 MHz Pentium III or higher processor; 1 GHz Pentium III or higher processor recommended.

Operating System

Microsoft Windows Server 2003 (Standard or Enterprise Edition). Microsoft Windows 2000 Server or Advanced Server with Service Pack 4 (SP4) or later.

Memory

512 megabytes (MB) of RAM; 1 gigabyte (GB) or more is recommended.

Other Devices

  • CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive

  • VGA or higher-resolution monitor

  • Keyboard and Microsoft Mouse or compatible pointing device

1 GHz Pentium III or higher processor; 3 GHz Pentium IV or higher recommended (dual processors recommended for more than 10,000 clients).

Operating System

Microsoft Windows Server 2003 (Standard or Enterprise Edition). Microsoft Windows 2000 Server or Advanced Server with Service Pack 4 (SP4) or later.

Memory

1 gigabyte (GB) of RAM or more.

Software Requirements

Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 SP1

WSUS requires .NET Framework 1.1 with SP1 installed.

Microsoft Background Intelligent Transfer Services (BITS) 2.0

WSUS requires BITS 2.0 and WinHTTP 5.1.

Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 SP1

WSUS requires Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 with SP1 installed on servers running Windows 2000 Server or Windows 2000 Advanced Server.

Internet Information Services (IIS) 5.0 or later

WSUS requires IIS 5.0 for servers running Windows 2000 and IIS 6.0 for servers running Windows Server 2003.

Database Software

WSUS requires database software. The Windows Server Update Services download includes a free version of Microsoft SQL Server, but only if you install on Windows Server 2003. Other options include installing Microsoft SQL Desktop Engine (MSDE) with at least Service Pack 3a (SP3a), which is also free, or SQL Server 2000 with at least SP3a. If you’re running Windows Server Update Services with Service Pack 1 (WSUS with SP1), you can use SQL Server 2005.
