Introduction

The Microsoft® Solution Accelerator for Business Desktop Deployment (BDD) 2007 for Windows Vista™ and the 2007 Microsoft Office system (BDD 2007) delivers end-to-end guidance for the efficient planning, building, testing, and deployment of Windows Vista, Microsoft Windows® XP Professional, and the 2007 Office system. This accelerator helps information technology (IT) professionals realize a quick return on investment (ROI) while setting new standards for reliability, performance, security, and ease of use.

This accelerator provides proven tools and practices with which IT professionals can:

  • Create a software and hardware inventory to assist in deployment planning.

  • Test applications for compatibility with Windows Vista and Windows XP Professional and mitigate the compatibility issues discovered during the process.

  • Set up an initial lab environment with imaging and deployment servers.

  • Customize and package core and supplemental applications.

  • Automate desktop image creation and deployment.

  • Ensure that the desktop is hardened to improve security within the environment.

  • Manage processes and technologies to produce comprehensive and integrated Lite Touch Installation (LTI) and Zero Touch Installation (ZTI) deployments.

The accelerator brings together time-honored and well-proven practices as well as the following Microsoft technologies:

  • Microsoft Windows Preinstallation Environment (Windows PE) for starting computers

  • Microsoft Windows Automated Installation Kit (Windows AIK) for configuring unattended setup answer files (Unattend.xml) and capturing images

  • Microsoft Windows Deployment Services (Windows DS) for starting Windows PE on destination computers across the network

  • Microsoft Windows User State Migration Tool (USMT) for capturing and restoring user state data

  • Application Compatibility Toolkit (ACT) for gathering application inventory as well as testing and remediating application-compatibility issues

  • The 2007 Office release as a core application

  • Microsoft Office 2007 Resource Kit (ORK) for customizing the 2007 Office system

  • Windows Vista and Windows XP Professional as the deployed operating systems

BDD 2007 contains guidance, sample templates, and technology files (such as scripts and configuration files). It also requires software that the team must download from the Internet as well as media that the team must provide. The solution’s documentation discusses these topics in detail. The focus of this solution is on computer deployment rather than the leveraged integration that the teams can achieve on the platform by combining computers and domains. This solution supports deploying computers in a Microsoft Windows Server® 2003 or Windows Server code named “Longhorn” server domain.

Note   For the latest information regarding BDD 2007, see C:\Program Files\BDD 2007\Documentation\Release Notes.

Note   BDD 2007 combines abstract concepts that are sometimes difficult to follow without citing specific examples. To make these concepts easier to understand, this solution references a desktop-deployment project at a fictional company called Woodgrove National Bank. For more information about Woodgrove National Bank and its infrastructure, see the document Woodgrove Enterprise IT Archetype. This solution also provides sample job aids for Woodgrove National Bank. The content in each planning template is specific to Woodgrove National Bank: Replace it with organization-specific information.

Note   In this document, Windows applies to both the Windows XP and the Windows Vista operating systems unless otherwise noted.
