Remove a network protocol or component

Applies To: Windows Server 2008, Windows Server 2008 R2, Windows Server 7

You can use this procedure to remove a network component.

Membership in the local Administrators group, or equivalent, is the minimum required to complete this procedure.

To remove a network protocol or component

  1. Open the Network Connections folder and view available connections.

  2. Right-click the connection from which you want to remove a network component, and then click Properties.

  3. Do one of the following:

    • If this is a local area connection, on the General tab, in This connection uses the following items, click the client, service, or protocol that you want to remove, and then click Uninstall.

Note

In Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2, select the item that you want to remove on the Networking tab.

  - If this is a dial-up or VPN connection, or broadband connection, on the **Networking** tab, in **This connection uses the following items**, click the client, service, or protocol you want to remove, and then click **Uninstall**.

  - If this is an incoming connection, on the **Networking** tab, in **Network components**, click the client, service, or protocol you want to remove, and then click **Uninstall**.

  1. In the **Uninstall **component name dialog box, click Yes.

Additional considerations

  • Removing a network protocol or component uninstalls it from your computer, and no network connections have access to that functionality. If you want to remove a protocol or component from only one of your network connections, see Enable or disable a network protocol or component.
