Deploying a solution that is based on Microsoft Office Project Server 2007 and Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 on an intranet environment presents its challenges, although the deployment approach is well documented in Microsoft TechNet. The Microsoft Office Project Server 2007 and Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 solution combined has many features which often overwhelm the customers trying such a deployment. Deploying the same solution on an extranet to allow contractors, partners and employees to access the solution features is currently a very intimidating challenge for most users because of the lack of detailed documentation and the reluctance to endanger the integrity and security of the data and servers exposed to the Internet and to possible hacking and other malfeasance.

The purpose of this document is to outline the content, approach, and test plan that gives customer a set of validated and tested best practices.

This guide provides planning recommendations for deploying Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 and Office Project Server 2007 in an extranet environment. It discusses the extranet topologies that are supported, details the hardening requirements for servers in an extranet environment, and describes a logical architecture sample that works in an extranet environment. The audiences for this guide include information architects, IT generalists, and program managers who plan to make Office SharePoint Server 2007 and Office Project Server sites available from the Internet. This guide was compiled by Jean-Francois LeSaux, an EPM Lead Architect for Microsoft.
