Group Policy Management Console Tools

The following tools are associated with Group Policy Management Console (GPMC) SP1.

Group Policy Management Console

Category

The GPMC SP1 is a Microsoft Management Console (MMC) snap-in used to administer Group Policy for Windows 2000 and Windows Server 2003-based domains.

Version compatibility

GPMC runs on both Windows Server 2003 and on Windows XP SP1 with the Microsoft .NET Framework v1 and later, and with QFE Q326469 applied. QFE Q326469 is automatically installed by gpmc.msi on computers with English as the default language. GPMC can be used to manage both Windows 2000 and Windows Server 2003 domain Group Policy.

For more information about GPMC, see the What Is Group Policy Management Console? topic in this collection.

Migration Tool Editor

Category

The Migration Table Editor (MTE) is provided with GPMC to facilitate the editing of migration tables. Migration tables are used for copying or importing Group Policy objects (GPOs) from one domain to another, in cases where the GPOs include domain-specific information that must be updated during copy or import. When transferring the GPO to a new domain, it might not always be desirable, or even possible, to use the exact same settings. Items that can be specific to a domain include references to security principals such as users, groups, and computers as well as Universal Naming Convention (UNC) paths.

Version compatibility

The Migration Table Editor is provided with GPMC.

Group Policy Management Console Group Policy Settings

You can permit or prohibit use of GPMC through an Administrative Templates policy setting, as shown in the following table.

Administrative Templates Policy Setting Description

Group Policy Management

USER\Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Microsoft Management Console\Restricted/Permitted snap-ins\Group Policy

This setting permits or prohibits the use of this snap-in. If you enable this setting, the snap-in is permitted. If you disable the setting, the snap-in is prohibited. If this setting is not configured, the setting of the Restrict users to the explicitly permitted list of snap-ins setting determines whether this snap-in is permitted or prohibited.

For a complete reference of all Administrative Templates policy settings, see Group Policy Settings Reference for Windows ServerĀ 2003.
