MAC

An algorithm that allows a receiver to ensure that a block of data has retained its integrity from the time it was sent until the time it was received.

Magic Packet

A broadcast frame used with wake-on-LAN (WOL) technology. The data that is contained in a Magic Packet is the defined constant as represented in hexadecimal: FF FF FF FF FF FF followed by sixteen contiguous copies of the receiving network adapter's media access control (MAC) address, possibly followed by a four- or six-byte password. A Magic Packet is used to awaken a computer from a low power state. Magic Packet™ is a registered trademark of Advanced Micro Devices of Sunnyvale, CA.

Mandatory Integrity Control

A mechanism for controlling access to securable objects based on integrity levels and mandatory policy in addition to discretionary access control. For example, a process may be required to have an integrity level that is equal to or higher than the integrity level of an object to obtain certain kinds of access to that object.

manifest

An XML document that describes requirements for an application. The application manifest can be a separate file or embedded in the application’s .exe file.

master boot record

The first sector on a hard disk, which begins the process of starting the computer. The MBR contains the partition table for the disk and a small amount of executable code called the master boot code.

Message Authentication Code

An algorithm that allows a receiver to ensure that a block of data has retained its integrity from the time it was sent until the time it was received.

MIC

A security feature that requires a process to have an integrity level equal to or higher than the integrity level of an object in order to obtain some kind of access to that object.
