The configured server role is invalid for this process.

Explanation

This event indicates that the Microsoft Exchange Server 2010 Hub Transport server role or Edge Transport server role may not have been provisioned correctly during installation.

This issue may occur when one of the following conditions is true:

  • The Transport server installation has become corrupted.
  • The user account that was used to install the Transport server did not have the appropriate permissions assigned.
  • Mismatched file sources were used to prepare the domain and install the Transport server. For example, the domain was prepared by using Exchange 2010 Service Pack 1 (SP1) files, and the Transport server was installed by using the RTM version of Exchange 2010.

User Action

To troubleshoot this issue, do one or more of the following:

  • Consultez les journaux système et des applications sur vos serveurs Exchange 2010 pour identifier des événements connexes. Par exemple, des événements qui se produisent juste avant ou après cet événement peuvent fournir des informations supplémentaires sur la cause première de cette erreur.
  • Increase diagnostics logging for the Microsoft Exchange Transport service. To do this, run the following commands at the Exchange Command Shell:
    Get-EventLogLevel -Identity msexchangetransport
    Get-EventLogLevel -Identity msexchangetransport\* | Set-EventLogLevel -Level Expert
  • Verify that the account that you use to install Exchange is a member of the following groups:
    • Exchange Organization Administrators
    • Local Administrators
  • Verify the prerequisites for the installation of Exchange. For more information, see Conditions préalables pour Exchange 2010.
  • Back up the Transport queue database files, and then remove, and reinstall the Transport role. By default, these files are located in the following directory:
    %ProgramFiles%\Microsoft\Exchange Server\V14\TransportRoles\data\Queue
When you reinstall Exchange, verify that you use the same version as was used to prepare the Active Directory schema.
  • If you backed up the Transport database, try to recover any queued messages from it. For more information, see Working with the Queue Database on Transport Servers.
  • If you created a new self-signed certificate on the Hub Transport server and on the Edge Transport server, you may have to reconfigure the Edge subscription. To do this, follow these steps:
    1. On the Edge Transport server, start the Exchange Management Shell.
    2. Run the following command to create a new Edge Subscription file:
      New-EdgeSubscription –FileName “C:\EdgeSubscription-1.xml”
    3. Copy the EdgeSubscription-1.xml file to the Hub Transport server.
    4. On the Hub Transport server, start the Exchange Management Console.
    5. Expand Microsoft Exchange On-Premises, expand Organization Configuration, and then click Hub Transport.
    6. In the details pane, click Edge Subscriptions, and then click New Edge Subscription in the Actions pane.
    7. Click Browse next to Active Directory Site, click the appropriate site, and then click OK. For example, click Default-First-Site-Name.
    8. Click Browse next to Subscription file, and then click the EdgeSubscription-1.xml file that you copied to the Hub Transport server, and then click OK.
    9. Click Next, and then click Finish.
