Optimize search relevance (FAST Search Server 2010 for SharePoint)(informazioni in lingua inglese)

Aggiornato: 10 febbraio 2011

One of the key features in a search solution is the ability to return relevant information to the user. Relevance describes how well a given search satisfies a user’s information needs. Relevance includes which documents are returned in the results (recall) and the order of those documents in the results (ranking). FAST Search Server 2010 for SharePoint provides good search relevance out of the box in addition to many possibilities for custom tuning. Optimizing search for relevance includes refining content for searching, tuning sort order and ranking. It is a task that should only be done by advanced search administrators and developers.

There is no single best relevance solution that satisfies all users and different search applications. This is why FAST Search Server 2010 for SharePoint provides advanced relevance tuning possibilities. Optimal relevance must be planned for and tuned to suit specific needs. Search relevance is more than the tuning of numbers in a configuration file. Search relevance is related to the total user experience of the search solution. This includes the following areas:

Presentation of results and functionality on the search page

  • Location of the different information elements, such as the search input box, result lists, refiners and federated content

  • Use of thumbnails and images

  • Content in the titles and the result summaries

  • Use of document previews

  • Search suggestions based on the letters that users type in the search box, related searches (find similar results), and spelling suggestions

  • Use of refiners for drilling down and filtering search results

  • Configuration of SharePoint and other sources to make high-quality content available for the search solution

  • The option of blocking out content that is not relevant for search to prevent unwanted content in the index

Search latency

  • The response time for simple searches

  • The response time for the presentation of document previews

Sorting and ranking of the search results

  • Field sorting based on text and numeric values

  • Sorting based on FAST Search Server 2010 for SharePoint rank profiles

  • Use of multilevel sort criteria (first sort by one criterion, then a second, then a third, and so on)
