Configuring initial deployment settings

Updated: February 1, 2011

Applies To: Forefront Threat Management Gateway (TMG)

Use the Forefront TMG Getting Started Wizard to configure or modify initial deployment settings. The wizard is comprised of the following three sub-wizards:

  • Network Setup Wizard—Use to configure network adapters on the server. Network adapters are associated with a unique Forefront TMG network.

  • System Configuration Wizard—Use to configure operating system settings, such as computer name information, and domain or workgroup settings.

  • Deployment Wizard—Use to configure malware protection for Web traffic, and to join the customer feedback program and telemetry service.

Before running the Getting Started Wizard

Before you run the Getting Started Wizard, you should:

  • Understand how Forefront TMG uses network objects to represent your infrastructure. For information, see Planning Forefront TMG network topology.

  • Understand the benefits and drawbacks of making Forefront TMG a domain member. For information, see Workgroup and domain considerations.

  • Collect the following information about network adapter settings:

    • Settings for the network adapter connected to your local access network, such as, IP address, subnet mask, and Domain Name System (DNS) server address.

    • Settings for the network adapter connected to the Internet. If your Internet service provider (ISP) provides a static address, record the IP address, subnet mask, and DNS server address.

    • Settings for any additional network adapters on the computer, such as, a third network adapter connected to a perimeter network.

  • Make sure you know the server name, and Fully Qualified Domain Name (FQDN) (if the computer belongs to a domain).

Running the Getting Started Wizard

After Forefront TMG installation, you can run the Getting Started Wizard to configure basic deployment settings, including network adapter settings, policy updates, and joining the server to a workgroup or domain.

Note

The Getting Started Wizard can only run locally. It is not available using remote management.

Note

Changes should not be made to the NIC after running the Getting Started Wizard.

To open the Getting Started Wizard

  1. In the Forefront TMG Management console, click the server name node.

  2. On the Tasks tab, click Launch Getting Started Wizard.
