This is the second of a series of blog posts showing you some of the best server and cloud resources produced by Microsoft.  My goal is to help IT Professionals understand our products and capabilities so they can start taking advantage of the industry’s leading datacenter technologies.  These resources are based on a Microsoft internal newsletter that I am now sharing with our customers.

Private Cloud Exam Resources

Many people are now taking the Microsoft Leaning exams 70-246 (Monitoring and Operating a Private Cloud with System Center 2012) and 70-247 (Configuring and Deploying a Private Cloud with System Center 2012) for the MCSE Private Cloud Certification.

Here are list of resources that may be helpful:

Microsoft Assessment & Planning (MAP) Toolkit 7 Released!

Get ready for Windows Server 2012 with the Microsoft Assessment and Planning (MAP) Toolkit 7.0.  The latest version of the MAP Toolkit adds several new planning scenarios that help you build for the future with agility and focus while lowering the cost of delivering IT.  Download MAP 7.0 and begin planning your server deployments today!

New capabilities allow you to:

  • Understand your readiness to deploy Windows Server 2012 in your environment
  • Determine Windows 8 readiness
  • Investigate how Windows Server and System Center can manage your heterogeneous environment through VMware migration and Linux server virtualization assessments
  • Size your desktop virtualization needs for both Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) and session-based virtualization using Remote Desktop Services
  • Ready your information platform for the cloud with the SQL Server 2012 discovery and migration assessment
  • Evaluate your licensing needs with usage tracking for Lync 2010, active users and devices, SQL Server 2012, and Windows Server 2012

Private Cloud Evaluation Guide Updates

The Private Cloud Evaluation Guide is built to give you the necessary information to evaluate the private cloud. In this evaluation guide, you will go through an entire scenario that you can use to evaluate the private cloud on your own premises in a proof of concept environment. The first part will walk you through deploying and configuring the infrastructure for the private cloud. The second part will go through the service model and application performance management as well as how to gain operational benefits through service delivery and automation.

The guide has an introduction to the Microsoft private cloud, then an overview of deploying and configuring the infrastructure for the private cloud, and finally it discusses the service model and application performance management as well as how to gain operational benefits through service delivery and automation.

Private Cloud Economics Tools Updates

We have updated the Private Cloud Economics whitepaper (no longer available), Private Cloud Economics, and the Server Virtualization calculators to reflect Windows Server 2012 (& ECI) pricing and licensing.   With WS 2012, our licensing cost advantage holds (several times less expensive than VMware depending on VM density) and there is no charge or tax for any virtualization, memory, or density increases.
