Click Product information management > Common > Products > Products. On the Action Pane, in the New group, select Product.

Use this form to create a new product.

Note

When you release a product, an item number is generated. The item number is identical to the product number. If you want to create a product with an item number that differs from the product number, you can do this from the Released products form. For more information, see New released product (form).

Product type

Define the type of the product, Item or Service.

Note

Products of the type Service cannot be included as items on a bill of materials (BOM) line. Use the Bills of materials form in Inventory and warehouse management to work with BOMs.

Product subtype

Define the subtype of the product that you are creating:

  • Product – A fixed product definition that does not have any variants.

  • Product master – A product definition that forms the basis of product variants.

Product number

The identifier of the product. The product number can be derived from a number sequence, or it can be entered manually, depending on the setup in the Number sequences form.

  • If the product number sequence that is set up for products is set to Manual, you must enter a product number when you create a new product.

  • If the product number sequence that is set up for products is set to Continuous, a continuous product number is entered when you create the product.

    Note

    The product number cannot be changed when the product is created.

Product name

The product name, which is copied from the product number. You can enter a different name, if you want the name to be different from the product number. You can also change the name after the product has been created.

Tip

To change the name of a released product, you must change the name of the product definition. You change the name of the product definition on the All products and product masters list page, which holds all shared instances of products and product masters. When you change the name of a product definition, the change is reflected in all the released versions of the product.

Search name

The search name, which is copied from the product number.

Tip

The following points apply to changes to the search name:

  • If you want the search name to be different from the product number, you can change the name from this form, or you can change it when the product is created.

  • When a product is released to a company, the search name can be changed for a company-specific product.
