BOM line setup (form)

Click Inventory management > Periodic > Bills of materials > Change BOM item. Click the Edit BOM line button.

Use this form to change the setup of bill of material (BOM) lines.

The following table provides descriptions for the controls in this form.

BOM

The BOM identification number for the selected BOM version.

Item number

The unique, user-defined code that is assigned when items are created.

Quantity

The number of units of the item that is included in one unit or one series. If the quantity is calculated per series, indicate the basis of the series in the Per series field. For example, an item on a BOM is generally referred to in 100-pound packages. If there are 10 pounds of component item A per 100-pound package, the quantity would be 10 per series 100. If the production process involves a gain of the current item, instead of consumption of the item, specify a negative quantity.

Configuration

Select an item configuration to specify an item with specific attributes.

Size

Specify the size of the item.

Color

Specify the color of the item.

Warehouse

Enter the warehouse in which you store your items.

Per series

The number of units for which the Quantity field is valid. For example, if quantity = 1, unit = liter, per series = 100 then 1 liter of the item is required to produce 100 finished items.

Unit

The unit in which the Quantity field is given. The BOM unit is used as the default, which is retrieved from the BOM unit field in the Item formReleased product details (form). Otherwise, the field is blank.

Configuration group

Select or change the configuration group for the item.

Position

Assign positions to items to sort or rearrange item order on BOM lines. Items can be of type Item.

Use the position sorting criteria to retrieve a sequentially ordered list of items on the BOM line according to position.

Vendor account

The vendor account ID for vendor line items. If this field is blank, vendor account information is retrieved from the operations resource.

Line type

Select whether the line is the Item, Phantom, or Vendor type. Depending on your selection, the line is handled differently.

Calculation

Select this check box to use the BOM line in BOM calculations. BOM calculations determine the cost price and sales prices for the bill of materials. Calculations depend on profit settings. BOM calculations give the estimated BOM prices on all BOM levels. Therefore, the contribution of a single item or operation to the price of the BOM level can be determined. The calculations also provide an overview of summarized costs for cost groups. This provides the contribution of a cost group on a particular BOM level.

Sub-BOM

For sub-BOM lines only, select an alternative BOM version to use when changing sub-BOM versions for a finished item. If blank, the active BOM version is used.

Subroute

For sub-BOM lines only, select the route number to use for the selected sub-BOM. If blank, the active route is used.

Product model number

The product model ID.

From date

The date from which the BOM line is valid.

To date

The last date the BOM line is valid.

Formula

The consumption calculation formula. The options are as follows:

  • Standard - The consumption is not proportional with any dimension of the finished item, and the quantity entered is the number that is used for the finished item.

  • Height * Constant

  • Height * Width * Constant

  • Height * Width * Depth * Constant

  • (Height * Width * Depth / Density) * Constant

Raw material consumption in the current BOM line is proportional with one or more dimensions in the finished item. If proportional, measurement-based management is useful because only one bill of material and one item must be created to apply to all measurements of the finished item.

An example of using measurements could be a board with customized measurements for each customer. The consumption of the raw material depends on the measurements that are used to cut the board. That is why the consumption can also be calculated automatically.

A configuration dimension can be redefined to determine other characteristics relative to the finished item. For example, the height dimension can be defined to be the number of coats for painted articles. This is because the raw materials consumption is also proportional to the number of times the article is to be painted. A measurement is a formula for calculation that can be used for any purpose.

The fields in the Dimensions tab are conversion factors that are included in the measurement calculation with the dimension of the finished item.

For example, to calculate paint consumption for a board measuring 2 x 2 feet, 4 square feet must be converted to a quantity of paint, in gallons. This is performed with the help of these conversion factors.

Consumption is

Select whether consumption is a variable or a constant volume/quantity.

Constant scrap

Specify a constant scrap value. Scrap is calculated in the unit that is specified in the BOM line. Scrap is used to calculate adjusted raw-material consumption in BOM lines.

Variable scrap

Specify a variable scrap value. Variable scrap is indicated as a percentage, where 10% is written as 10.00. Scrap is used to calculate corrected raw-material usage in the BOM lines.

Flushing principle

Select the method of registering item consumption against a production order. The options are as follows:

  • Start - Enable automatic consumption when you update a production order to the start phase. This is the default setting for a new item and an existing item that is updated.

  • Finish - Enable automatic consumption when you update a production order to the report as finished phase.

  • Manual - Microsoft Dynamics AX does not register consumption automatically. You must enter it manually on the picking list.

If you leave the field blank, the Flushing principle setting on the item is used.

Note

To enable automatic consumption, use this field together with the Automatic BOM consumption field when you update the production order.

Rounding-up

Specify the type of rounding-up to use. Rounding-up is used if the raw materials are consumed in specific quantities.

Options include the following:

  • No - Rounding-up is not used.

  • Quantity - Quantity must be a multiple of the given quantity. For example, when whole numbers are required, specify 1.00 in the Multiples field. Numbers are always rounded to quantities divisible by 1.00.

  • Measurement - Rounding-up according to measurements is used when a raw material comes in specific dimensions.

  • Consumption - The estimated consumption is rounded up so that it is divisible by the number of units the raw material comes in. This is used when consumption of a raw material can only be used in certain quantities, and the rest of the raw material is considered scrap.

Example

Calculation when rounding up:

  1. Determine the sales quantity based on the measurement dimensions, as in this example in which the quantity = 2.

  2. Determine the number of times the measurement sales quantity can be divided into multiples. In the example earlier in this section, this means 5 / 2 = 2.5. The sales quantity is rounded down to 0 (zero) decimals, which is 2.5 = 2. That formula means that a 5-foot long steel rod can be cut into two, 2-foot pieces.

  3. Calculate consumption, because the number of multiples that is that is required to produce a specific quantity is known. In the example earlier in this section, a 5-foot rod produces 2 pieces of 2-foot rod. If the production quantity for the finished item is 10 units, 10 / 2 = 5 multiples are used. Because each multiple is 5 feet, consumption is calculated to 5 multiples x 5 feet = 25 feet.

Calculation without rounding up:

  1. The consumption is calculated as 10 units x 2-foot pieces = 20 feet. When rounding up according to measurement, the system calculates automatically that with a production of 10 units, there will be 5 feet of scrap.

  • Example

  • Paint is stored in inventory in 25-quart cans. When it is taken from inventory, it is taken in 25-quart can increments. In this case, rounding-up according to Consumption is selected and multiples are set it to 25.

The production quantity for the finished item is 20 units, and 2 quarts of paint must be used for each unit. Consumption is calculated as 20 units x 2 quarts = 40 quarts. When rounded up to a multiple of 25, 50 quarts of paint are required. When rounding up according to Consumption, excess consumption, or scrap, of 10 quarts is automatically calculated.

Multiples

The multiple numbers that are used when the item is consumed. This field is used when you are rounding up.

The conversion factor for the height dimension. Used in the formula for BOM calculations (selected on the General tab) to determine space requirements for items.

Width_@SYS7069

The conversion factor for the width dimension. Used in the formula for BOM calculations (selected on the General tab) to determine space requirements for items.

Depth_@SYS9514

The conversion factor for the depth dimension. Used in the formula for BOM calculations (selected on the General tab) to determine space requirements for items.

Density_@SYS4911

The conversion factor for the density dimension. Used in the formula for BOM calculations (selected on the General tab) to determine space requirements for items.

Constant_@SYS8939

The conversion factor for the sales quantity. Used in the formula for BOM calculations (selected on the General tab) to determine space requirements for items.

Batch number

Enter the batch number dimension. If you select Edit lines and Explode lines in the upper section of the Shipment or Receive form, you can change the batch number for the transfer order line.

Location

The location inside a warehouse. If you select Edit lines and Explode lines in the upper section of the Shipment or Receive form, you can change the location number for the transfer order line.

Pallet ID

The unique ID for the pallet (serial shipping container code).

Serial number

The serial number dimension. If you select Edit lines and Explode lines in the upper section of the Shipment or Receive form, you can change the serial number for the transfer order line.
