Variable groups for product models

Applies To: Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 R3, Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 R2, Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 Feature Pack, Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012

When a product model is created, the modeling variables can be grouped so that they are shown to the user in a structured way. In other words, variable groups serve the same purpose as the field groups and tabs that are used in other areas in Microsoft Dynamics AX.

The variable groups can also contain subgroups. Therefore, you can build a hierarchy of variable groups. This feature can be used to make product models more user-friendly.

The Show user dialog box as tree structure check box in the User dialog box area of the Product Builder parameters form controls how the variable groups are displayed to the user during the item configuration. If this check box is not selected, the variable groups are shown on tab pages. Click Product information management > Setup > Product builder > Product builder parameters. Select or clear the Show user dialog box as tree structure check box.

Note

If the product models use variable groups on more than two levels, this check box must be selected to ensure that all levels are visible to the user. The tab-page format cannot display variable groups on more than two levels.
