Inventory locations (form)

This topic applies to features in the Inventory management module. It does not apply to features in the Warehouse management module.

Click Inventory management > Setup > Inventory breakdown > Inventory locations.

Use this form to manage inventory locations in a warehouse. You can identify an item’s location by the aisle, rack, shelf, and bin coordinates.

The following tables provide descriptions for the controls in this form.

View, create, or modify inventory locations.

View additional information about the location that is selected on the Overview tab.

Other

Enter check text and the location type, or specify a blocking cause for the location. You can also set up the sorting order for locations.

Tree structure

View a graphical representation of the locations. Locations appear in a tree structure, based on their coordinates. The tree structure pane can also be used to find a specific location.

To define the setup of the tree structure, click Setup >>, and then select the data to display. Select the Summation check box to view the number of locations in the underlying levels of the tree, such as the number of racks in an aisle or the number of shelves on a rack.

Inquiries

Open a menu that contains the following items:

  • Pallets – View information about individual pallets.

  • On-hand – View the inventory that is available, according to the product dimensions.

  • Transactions – View the inventory transactions on the item or lot.

  • Picking lines – View information about the lines for the picking route.

  • Activity on location – View the activities that are in progress for a location.

  • Pick – View the setup of the item by product dimension.

  • Receipt – View items for which the location is the default receipt location.

  • Issue – View items for which the location is the default issue location.

Pallet transports

Open a menu that contains the following items:

  • From location – View information about pallet transports from this location.

  • To location – View information about pallet transports to this location.

Functions

Open a menu that contains the following items:

  • Create refill – Request that a picking location be filled with a pallet from a bulk location.

  • Counting – Enable online counting.

  • Copy aisle – Copy all locations from one aisle to another aisle.

  • Copy rack – Copy all locations from one rack to another rack.

  • Change location type – Change the location type.

    Note

    If you change the location type from a location type that tracks load information to a location of the Outbound dock, Production input location, or Kanban supermarket type, the load information is no longer tracked. If you change the location type back to a type that tracks load information, the information is retrieved.

Print

Open a menu with the following item:

  • Location label – Print location labels.

Field

Description

Warehouse

The warehouse that contains the location. Together with the location name, the warehouse is used as a reference to the location. For more information, see Warehouses (form).

Location

The name of the location. Together with the warehouse, the location name is used as a reference to the location. Typically, the location name is generated automatically based on the location's coordinates, which are the aisle, rack, shelf, and bin. These coordinates are based on the setup in this form. To enter the name manually, you must first select the Manual update check box on the General tab.

Location type

The location type, which identifies the uses for the location. The following types are available:

  • Inbound dock – Identifies locations where items are received and registered.

  • Outbound dock – Identifies locations where items are gathered before dispatch.

  • Bulk location – Identifies locations where items are stored until they are either moved to an outgoing dock or used to fill a picking location.

  • Picking location – Identifies locations where items have fixed picking locations. This location type is used for shipping quantities that are less than whole pallets.

  • Inspection location – Identifies locations for items that must undergo quality control.

  • Production input location – Identifies locations for raw materials that are used to manufacture components or finished goods.

Max. pallets

The maximum number of pallets that can be held at the location.

Max. weight

The maximum weight that can be held at the location.

Max. volume

The maximum volume that can be held at the location.

Number of pallets

The current number of pallets at the location.

Available pallet locations

The number of pallets at the location that are neither used nor reserved.

Current volume

The volume that is currently stored at the location.

Available volume

The volume at the location that is neither used nor taken.

Current weight

The weight that is currently stored at the location.

Available weight

The weight at the location that is neither used nor taken.

Aisle

The aisle coordinate for the location. Select an aisle that was created for the warehouse.

Rack, Shelf, and Bin

The rack, shelf, and bin coordinates for the location.

Tip

To enable the rack, shelf, and bin coordinates for a location, select the Include rack, Include shelf, and Include bin check boxes for the associated warehouse on the Location names tab in the Warehouses form.

Manual update

Select this check box to manually specify the location name. If this check box is cleared, the location name is generated automatically, based on its assigned coordinator. The coordinators are aisle, rack, shelf, and bin.

Both the warehouse and the name of the location uniquely identify a location.

Input area

The storage area where the location is. This information is used when a location is found for items that are referred to on the item receipt.

Picking area

The picking area that the location belongs to. Only locations that belong to the same picking area are on the same picking route.

Height

The height of the location. Specify the height that is available for the pallets. Do not include the supporting structures between the shelves.

Width

The width of the location.

Depth

The depth of the location.

Volume

The volume of the location. The volume is calculated by using the height, weight, and depth of the location.

Absolute height

Enter the location's height above ground level. This, together with the maximum height of the forklift, makes sure that only transports that the forklift can handle are selected.

Pallet type group

Select which types of pallets can be put at the location. For more information, see Pallet type group (form).

Check text

The text that online pickers and forklift drivers must specify to verify that they are at the correct location. If you do not enter check text, operators are not asked to enter this text. Therefore, no checking will be required at this location by online pickers and forklift drivers.

Destination location

The location where items must be delivered to be stored. This typically is the actual location. However, for drive-through racks, for example, items must be delivered at the rear of the rack.

If a location is specified as the rear of the rack, the forklift driver is sent to that location, instead, when items must be delivered there.

Input blocked

Select a blocking cause if you do not want this location to be selected when the system searches for a location for items. For more information, see Blocking cause (form).

Output blocked

Select a blocking cause if you do not want this location to be selected when the system reserves a shipment. For more information, see Blocking cause (form).

(Other) Manual update

Select this check box if you must manually specify the sorting code for a location.

Sort code

The sorting code that is used when the picking lines are sorted. This code indicates the best picking route through inventory. Sorting is in ascending order.
