How to Remove a Transport Rule

Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 will reach end of support on April 11, 2017. To stay supported, you will need to upgrade. For more information, see Resources to help you upgrade your Office 2007 servers and clients.

Applies to: Exchange Server 2007, Exchange Server 2007 SP1, Exchange Server 2007 SP2, Exchange Server 2007 SP3

This topic explains how to use the Exchange Management Console or the Exchange Management Shell to remove an existing transport rule on a computer that has the Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 Hub Transport server role or the Edge Transport server role installed.

For more information about the Transport Rules agents, see Overview of Transport Rules.

Before You Begin

Important

If you remove a transport rule from a Hub Transport server, the transport rule is removed from the whole Exchange 2007 organization, except for Edge Transport servers.

To perform the following procedures, the account you use must be delegated the following:

  • Exchange Organization Administrator role

To perform the following procedures on a computer that has the Edge Transport server role installed, you must log on by using an account that is a member of the local Administrators group on that computer.

For more information about permissions, delegating roles, and the rights that are required to administer Exchange Server 2007, see Permission Considerations.

Using the Exchange Management Console to Remove a Transport Rule

The procedure used to remove a transport rule on a Hub Transport server is slightly different from the procedure used to remove a transport rule on an Edge Transport server. Use the appropriate procedure to remove a transport rule on the server role that you are administering.

To use the Exchange Management Console to remove an existing transport rule on a Hub Transport server

  1. Open the Exchange Management Console on the Hub Transport server.

  2. In the console tree, click Organization Configuration, and then click Hub Transport.

  3. On the Transport Rules tab, right-click the rule that you want to remove, and then click Remove.

  4. Click Yes if you are sure that you want to remove the transport rule.

To use the Exchange Management Console to remove an existing transport rule on an Edge Transport server

  1. Open the Exchange Management Console on the Edge Transport server that contains the transport rule that you want to remove.

  2. In the console tree, click Edge Transport.

  3. On the Transport Rules tab, right-click the rule that you want to remove, and then click Remove.

  4. Click Yes if you are sure that you want to remove the transport rule. The transport rule that you select is removed from the local computer.

Using the Exchange Management Shell to Remove a Transport Rule

In the Exchange Management Shell, you can remove transport rules by using the following syntax:

Remove-TransportRule <GUID or transport rule name>

Use the WhatIf parameter to verify that the results of the operation are what you expect. For more information about the WhatIf parameter, see WhatIf, Confirm, and ValidateOnly Parameters.

To use the Exchange Management Shell to remove an existing transport rule

  1. Run the following command to see how transport rules will be affected without making any modifications:

Remove-TransportRule "Messages that contain a Journal report" -WhatIf

  2. Run the following command to remove the transport rule:

Remove-TransportRule "Messages that contain a Journal report"
