This section provides information that will help you manage the policy and compliance features that can be applied to e-mail messages that are in transport in Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 by using cmdlets in the Exchange Management Shell.

The policy and compliance features in Exchange 2007 help you comply with various regulatory, legal, privacy, and other requirements that can be enforced on e-mail communications that are sent to and from the organization and the Internet, and internal communications between individuals in the organization. E-mail administrators are responsible for making sure that their e-mail systems comply with the policies that are established by the organization's management.

The following list describes the Exchange 2007 management components that help you achieve these goals:

  • Transport Rules agents   There are two transport rules agents in Exchange 2007. The Transport Rules agent runs on Hub Transport servers and helps you meet regulatory and corporate policy requirements. The Edge Rules agent runs on the Edge Transport server and helps you protect your organization from unwanted commercial messages and viruses. For more information about the Exchange Management Shell cmdlets for the transport rules agents, see Transport Rules Agent Cmdlets.

  • Journaling agent   The Journaling agent helps you configure how Exchange enforces e-mail retention policies on messages that are sent or received by departments or individuals in your organization, to and from recipients outside your organization, or both.

For more information about the Exchange Management Shell cmdlets for the Journaling agent, see Journaling Agent Cmdlets.

  • Message classification   Message classifications are an Exchange 2007 and Microsoft Office Outlook 2007 feature that is intended to help organizations comply with their e-mail policies and regulatory responsibilities.

For more information about the Exchange Management Shell cmdlets for the message classification feature, see Message Classification Cmdlets.
