Records management enables an organization to manage a content item from creation to disposal as dictated by applicable laws. Content items that can be considered records include physical or electronic documents, e-mail, or other forms of digital information such as instant message transcripts. Organizations define the types of information that should be classified as a record, how long the record must be maintained, and the manner in which records are disposed. Office SharePoint Server 2007 includes records management features that you can use to help your organization meet its regulatory and legal requirements and manage its corporate knowledge. To manage records in Office SharePoint Server 2007, site designers and records managers plan and implement a Records Center site. This site, based on the Records Center site template, contains features that you can use to implement your file plan and manage records while they are being retained. Digital media from client computers, file servers, and e-mail systems is created and stored in an active document site such as a document library or document workspace. The media is then transferred to the Records Center site either by using a default method, such as the Send to Records Center command, or by using the programmable interface.
