Operations Manager 2007 SP1 Release Notes

These release notes are for Microsoft Operations Manager 2007 SP1. Please read these release notes thoroughly before you install or upgrade Operations Manager 2007 SP1 or begin importing and using management packs.

64-bit Compatibility

64-bit ASP .NET Applications Running on 64-bit Windows Operating Systems Cannot Be Monitored Using the ASP.NET Applications Library Management Pack

If a user selects a 64-bit ASP .NET application using 'ASP.NET Web application' and 'ASP.NET Web service" management pack templates, the application will not be monitored.

Workaround: None. Delete the application from the management pack template list.

Upgrade to SP1

Baseline Monitors Might Get Unloaded After Upgrading a Management Server

Baseline monitors might get unloaded after a management server is upgraded to SP1 but before the agents are upgraded. If this occurs, events of type Error and Warning will be written to the event log indicating that monitors have been unloaded. During this time, Operations Manager 2007 will no longer collect information from the affected performance counters.

Workaround: This issue is resolved as soon as the agents are upgraded to SP1. We recommend upgrading any agents that are managed by the upgraded server as soon as possible.

No Agents Display in Pending Management when Upgrading from Operations Manager 2007 SP1 RC (Build 6246) to Operations Manager 2007 SP1 (Build 6278)

When performing an upgrade from Operations Manager 2007 SP1 RC (build 6246) to Operations Manager 2007 SP1 (build 6278), the version number for the agents remains as 6.0.6246.0 and no agents are displayed in Pending Management.

Workaround: A repair process initiated from the Operations Console needs to be performed. See the procedure “To upgrade agents from Operations Manager 2007 SP1 RC (build 6246) to Operations Manager 2007 SP1 (build 6278) using the Operations Console” in the upgrade guide at https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=106961

Setup

The Option to Back Up the Encryption Key Is Not Available when the Operations Console Is Not Installed

The prompt to backup the encryption key does not display when the Root Management Server is installed without the Operations Console.

Workaround: Perform the following procedure to install the SecureStorageBackup tool.

To manually install the SecureStorageBackup tool

  1. On the Operations Manager installation media, locate the following four files in the SupportTools folder.

    • Microsoft.EnterpriseManagement.UI.ConsoleFramework.dll
    • Microsoft.Mom.UI.Common.dll
    • Microsoft.Mom.UI.Wrappers.dll
    • SecureStorageBackup.exe
  2. Copy these file to the installation directory for Operations Manager 2007, typically %systemroot%\Program Files\System Center Operations Manager 2007.

  3. Double-click the file SecureStorageBackup.exe to start the Encryption Key Backup or Restore Wizard.

Note

We strongly recommend that you back up the encryption key for recovery and maintenance purposes. For more information, see the Operations Manager Help.

Audit Collection Service

Audit Collection Services Events Are Written to the Application Event Log After Upgrading to SP1

Audit Collection Services (ACS) events continue to be written to the Application Event log and not to the Operations Manager event log after upgrading to SP1.

Workaround: Restart the computer that hosts the ACS collector.

Agentless Exception Monitoring

A Low-Privileged AEM Action Account Must Be Created If the Management Server Action Account Is a Low-Privileged Account

If the management server is changed to a low-privileged account, then a low-privileged account will have to be created for AEM. The credentials used for the management server and AEM action account can be the same.

Workaround: For more information about this issue, see https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=109228

Operations Console

When using Microsoft Internet Explorer 6, clicking a Web link in a details pane might cause the resulting Web page to load in the details pane.

Workaround: This is a known issue with Internet Explorer 6 and can be resolved by using Microsoft Internet Explorer 7.

Blank Rows Might Be Rendered when Scrolling or Multi Selecting in the Alert and State View

This issue rarely occurs. When there is a large amount of data in the alert or state view, some rows displayed might be blank and no data is displayed in the view.

Workaround: Close and then re-open the Operations Console.

Maintenance Mode Might Not Be Available when Multiple Items Are Selected in State View

The option to start or stop Maintenance Mode using the right-click menu might not be available after selecting multiple items in the State view.

Workaround: Use the Actions Pane to start or stop Maintenance Mode.

An Error Might Occur when Attempting to Connect to an Upgraded Root Management Server Using an Operations Console

When using the Operations Console to connect to an upgraded Root Management Server (version SP1), the following error message might display:

“Server version ('6.0.XXXX.X') installed on management group <management group name> does not match assembly version ('6.0.5000.0').”

Workaround: Upgrade the Operations Console to SP1. If this is not practical, you can disable version checking by using the following procedure.

Note

Close the Operations Console before starting this procedure. Changes will not take affect until you re-open the Operations Console.

To disable version check

  1. On the Windows desktop, click Start, and then click Run.

  2. Type regedit and then click OK. The Registry Editor starts.

    Warning

Incorrectly editing the registry can severely damage your system. Before you make changes to the registry, you should back up any valued data that is on the computer.

  3. Navigate to the HKey_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Microsoft Operations Manager\3.0\Console.

  4. Right-click Console, point to New, and then click Key.

  5. Rename New Key #1 to ManagementGroupSessionManager, and then press ENTER.

  6. Right-click ManagementGroupSessionManager, point to New, and then click DWORD Value.

  7. Rename New Value #1 to DisableVersionCheck and then press ENTER.

  8. Right-click DisableVersionCheck, and then click Modify.

  9. In the Edit DWORD Value dialog box, in the Value data text box, enter the number 1, and then click OK.

Monitoring

A User Might Receive Multiple Notifications when Multiple Subscription Rules Match a Single Alert

If multiple rules match a single alert and these subscriptions are configured to notify the same recipient address, the user will receive multiple notifications for the alert.

Workaround: Ensure that the recipient is not configured for multiple subscriptions that may have overlapping criteria.

Computer May Not Come Out of Maintenance Mode at the Scheduled Time

When maintenance mode is complete, there can be a delay of up to five minutes before maintenance mode is reported in the Operations Console.

Workaround: None.

The Monitor Is Unloaded When Overriding the Inner or Outer Sensitivity Settings in a Baseline Monitor

After creating a baseline monitor, you can open the properties for the monitor and change the inner and outer sensitivity settings on the Override tab. When saving the changes, the baseline monitor will be unloaded and an event of type Error with an Event ID of 10123 and a description of "Duplicate Signature ID usage detected for STT Signature ID" will be written to the event log.

Workaround: You can disable the baseline monitor and the associated baseline rules before changing the inner and outer sensitivity settings. The following procedure assumes you created a baseline monitor named TestMonitor from the Operations console.

To disable the baseline monitor and rule

  1. In the Operations Console, click Authoring.

  2. In the Authoring pane, expand Authoring, expand Management Pack Objects, and then click Monitors.

  3. In the Monitors pane, right-click the TestMonitor, and then click Properties.

  4. In the TestMonitor Properties dialog box, select the Overrides tab, click Disable, and then click OK.

  5. In the Authoring pane, click Rules.

  6. In the Rules pane, right click Signature Collection Rule for STT Monitor [TestMonitor], and then click Properties.

  7. In the Signature Collection Rule for STT Monitor [TestMonitor] Properties dialog box, select the Overrides tab, click Disable, and then click OK.

The inner and outer sensitivity settings for the baseline monitor can now be changed from the Overrides property page. The value for the outer sensitivity should be greater than the value for the inner sensitivity, and the value for the inner sensitivity for the baseline monitor should have the same value as the Sensitivity parameter for the associated Signature Collection Rule for STT Monitor rule. When these overrides apply to both the rule and the monitor, remove the disable overrides for both the monitor and the rule.

Reporting

Reporting Server Might Not Install On a Server Where Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 Reporting Is Installed

Attempting to install Operations Manager 2007 SP1 Reporting on a computer in which Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 Reporting is installed on a SQL Reporting Services Server might fail. Reporting setup might fail if the SRS instance contains an instance name of "Sharepoint".

Workaround: Ensure that you are not attempting to install Operations Manager 2007 SP1 Reporting on a computer that is hosting Office SharePoint Server 2007 or on a computer that hosts an SRS instance named "Sharepoint."

Tasks

Task Parameters Containing Spaces or Quotation Marks Might Be Deleted when Editing with the Operations Console

Editing task properties while using the Operations Console might cause the spaces or quotation marks in the parameters to be deleted. Task properties can be viewed, but if edited, spaces or quotation marks in the parameters might be removed.

Workaround: For task properties that include parameters containing spaces or quotation marks, do not use the Operations Console for editing task properties. Edit the XML in the appropriate unsealed management pack, and then re-import the unsealed management pack.

Web Console

Right-Click Menu Items and Dialog Boxes in the Web Console Might Fail to Function when Using Internet Explorer on a Computer Hosting the Windows Server 2003 Operating System

When using Microsoft Internet Explorer on a computer hosting Windows Server 2003 to access the Web Console, some right-click menu items and dialog boxes might fail to function. If Internet Explorer Enhanced Security Configuration is installed, a message indicating that “about: blank” is not a trusted site might be displayed. If Display enhanced security configuration dialog is disabled in Internet Explorer, the “about: blank” message will not be displayed and right-click menu items might fail to function.

Workaround: Add about: blank as a trusted site. We recommend leaving Internet Explorer Enhanced Security Configuration installed. For more information about managing Internet Explorer Enhanced Security Configuration, see https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=92055
