What is the Internet Explorer Compatibility Test Tool?

Applies To: Windows 7, Windows Vista

The Internet Explorer® Compatibility Test Tool (IECTT) provides a user interface (UI) that enables you to display data about your Windows® Internet Explorer 7 and Windows Internet Explorer 8 issues in real time, enabling you to filter your results and to upload your data to your ACT database, by using the ACT Log Processing Service.

Common Scenarios

The following sections describe common IECTT Tool scenarios.

View Web-based Issues in Real Time

The IECTT enables you to locate and to view your Web-based issues in real time, while you are testing your Web sites and Web applications against Internet Explorer 7 and Internet Explorer 8. After you complete your testing, you can view your results in the Live Data screen of the IECTT.

Upload Web Issues to the ACT Database

The IECTT enables you to upload your Web-based issues to the ACT database, which processes the information and enables you to view your results on the Analyze screen of the Application Compatibility Manager.

The following sections describe the technologies related to the IECTT.

Application Compatibility Manager

The Application Compatibility Manager works with the Internet Explorer Compatibility Test Tool, enabling you to view your issue results from the Internet Explorer – Web Site Report screen.

Internet Explorer Compatibility Test Tool Dependencies

The following sections describe the Internet Explorer Compatibility Test Tool dependencies.

Event Log Monitor

The Event Log Monitor (ELM) works with the Internet Explorer Compatibility Test Tool to monitor the Microsoft Windows NT® event log for any issues logged against the tool.

Microsoft Application Compatibility Toolkit Data Collector

The IECTT requires the ACT-DC to start and stop its processes, to process the internal log file and generate the Internet Explorer Compatibility Test Tool log file, and to upload the Internet Explorer Compatibility Test Tool log file to the ACT Log Processing Service.

ACT Log Processing Service

The IECTT requires the ACT Log Processing Service to process internal logs and to generate data for viewing in the Application Compatibility Manager reports.

Important

The ACT Log Processing Service account must be an Administrator account.

Internet Explorer 7 or Internet Explorer 8

Internet Explorer 7 and Internet Explorer 8 work with the IECTT to enable the logging of Web-related compatibility issues to the Windows event log.
