Upgrading an MDM Device Management Server to MDM 2008 SP1

2/9/2009

You must upgrade MDM Device Management Server to MDM 2008 SP1. If you use load balancing for multiple servers that are running MDM Device Management Server, the steps in this section show you how to upgrade a single or multiple MDM Device Management Server deployment. During this process, you will be unable to change fully qualified domain names (FQDNs), locations of computers that are running Microsoft SQL Server, installation directory paths, or Web site administration ports during this process.

Important

To upgrade from MDM to MDM 2008 SP1, the administrator running the upgrade installers (Setup MSIs for MDM Enrollment Server, MDM Device Management Server, MDM Gateway Server, MDM Self Service Portal, MDM Administrator Tools) must be a member of both the SCMDM2008ServerAdministrators and SCMDMServerAdmins (SCMDM2008) administrator groups. If the user is not a member of the MDM Server Administrators group, Setup will fail. Ensure you log off and then on after changing permissions.

The upgrade process will automatically re-request MDM certificates for MDM Device Management Server. On the Server Certification Authority page, if you select the Do not request certificates during setup check box, there will be no certificates on your MDM Web sites after the upgrade.

Important

If the automatic certificate process fails in this step, you must attach the certificates to the appropriate MDM Device Management Server Internet Information Services (IIS) Web sites manually. For more information about how to install certificates manually, see Manual Certificate Procedures in the MDM Deployment Guide.

To upgrade MDM Device Management Server

  1. On the MDM 2008 SP1 Setup menu, choose, choose Mobile Device Management Server.

  2. On the Device Management Server Upgrade Wizard page, choose Upgrade Device Management Server, and then choose Next.

  3. Read the Microsoft Software License Terms, and then select the I accept the License Terms for Microsoft Software check box. Choose Next.

  4. On the Instance Selection page, select the SCMDM2008 instance, and then choose Next.

  5. On the Installation Directory page, the path of the installation directory appears. However, it is not available for change. Choose Next.

  6. On the Database Installation page, the location of the SQL server appears. However, it is not available for change. Choose Next.

  7. On the Server Certification Authority page, type the name of the certification authority server in the Certification Authority box. This field is prepopulated with the certification authority name that you used in the MDM 2008 version. If you do not want to change these values, you can accept them. Choose Next. Type the certification authority in the form of <ca_server_FQDN>\<ca_instance_name>. This should be a certification authority where you have MDM certificate templates enabled.

  8. If you have not already configured Microsoft Update on the server, a Microsoft Update page appears that prompts you to configure the server for Microsoft Update. Make your selection, and then choose Next.

  9. On the Ready to Upgrade page, verify your selections, and then choose Upgrade.

  10. On the Progress page, Setup may appear to stop responding for as long as 30 minutes or more during the database upgrade. You must not exit or cancel this process.

  11. Choose Finish to complete MDM Device Management Server Setup. Allow enough time for the installation settings to replicate.

  12. If you use multiple servers that are running MDM Device Management Server, you must repeat these procedures for each server that is running MDM Device Management Server.

    Important

After completing these procedures, you must put each MDM Enrollment Server and MDM Device Management Server back onto the load balancer if it is necessary. Also you must ensure that each MDM Enrollment Server and MDM Device Management Server is back online.

  13. Open Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager and start the WSUS Administration web site.

  14. Open the Services console and start the service Update Services. Finally start the service SCMDM Software Distribution Service.
