AD RMS Client 1.0 Registry Settings

Applies To: Windows Server 2008, Windows Server 2008 R2

The AD RMS client is built into the Windows Vista OS so that the AD RMS client is no longer a separate installation. Operating systems prior to Windows Vista require installation and activation of the AD RMS client software. The AD RMS client has no local configurations that can be modified from the client itself as the client has no local user interface. All configurations are performed either from the AD RMS enabled applications or via registry overrides.

Such registry settings are used to modify certain configurations to fine-tune the deployment of AD RMS. These changes can be done in five different areas of the registry corresponding to Microsoft Digital Rights Management (MSDRM), Microsoft Office, XPS, Active Directory Federation Services and Rights Management Add-On (RMA) for Internet Explorer.

While modifying these settings might be cumbersome under most circumstances, they can be incorporated into Group Policy Objects for large scale deployments, significantly reducing the effort and risks normally related to registry edits. Instructions on how to integrate these parameters into group policies are provided later in this paper.

Warning

Incorrectly editing the registry may severely damage your system. Before making changes to the registry, you should back up any valued data on the computer.

The following sections will present several registry setting options that are available for deploying clients successfully. These may or may not be required in every circumstance and should only be used if they are required for your environment.

Note

For 64-bit version of Windows, the configurations below must be done inside the Wow6432Node key located at HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Wow6432Node.
