Requirements for Upgrading to Windows HPC Server 2008 R2

The following software components are necessary to upgrade your Windows® HPC Server 2008 cluster to Windows HPC Server 2008 R2:

  • Microsoft® HPC Pack 2008 Service Pack 1 installation media. If you have not yet installed Service Pack 1 on your HPC cluster, you can download it from here: https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/p/?LinkId=198190.

  • Microsoft HPC Pack 2008 Service Pack 2 installation media. If you have not yet installed Service Pack 2 on your HPC cluster, you can download it from here: https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/p/?LinkId=198191.

  • Microsoft HPC Pack 2008 R2 installation media. You must have the installation media, or access to the installation files from a network location. You can use one of the following:

  • Windows Server® 2008 R2 installation media. You must have the installation media or access to the installation files from a network location. You can download the Windows HPC Server 2008 R2 Suite Evaluation, which includes the evaluation version of the Windows Server 2008 R2 HPC Edition operating system.

    Important
    • You must have the installation media for an edition of Windows Server 2008 R2 that is a supported upgrade path from the edition of Windows Server 2008 that is currently installed on the head node of your HPC cluster. For more information, see Windows Server 2008 R2 Upgrade Paths (https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/p/?LinkId=198192).

    • If the head node of your cluster has Windows Server 2008 HPC Edition installed, you can only upgrade it to Windows Server 2008 R2 HPC Edition. Also, you cannot upgrade to Windows Server 2008 R2 HPC Edition from an edition of Windows Server 2008 that is not Windows Server 2008 HPC Edition.
