Create a public folder mailbox in Exchange 2016

Estimated time to complete: less than 5 minutes

Before you can create public folders in your Exchange 2016 organization, you need to create at least one public folder mailbox. Public folder architecture uses specially designed mailboxes to store both the public folder hierarchy and the content. This also means that there no longer are the public folder databases that were used in previous versions of Exchange.

How do I do this?

  1. Open the EAC by browsing to the URL of your Exchange 2016 Mailbox server. For example, https://Ex2016/ECP.

  2. Enter your user name and password in Domain\user name and Password, and then click Sign in.

  3. Go to Public folders > Public folder mailboxes. On the Public folder mailboxes page, click Add Add Icon, and then enter a name for the public folder mailbox.

  4. (Optional) Click Browse next to Organizational unit, and then select an organizational unit where the public folder mailbox should be placed.

  5. Click Browse next to Mailbox database, and then select the mailbox database where the public folder mailbox should be stored. The mailbox database you select should be located on an Exchange 2016 server that has the capacity and performance to support the public folders you plan to deploy.

Check out Public Folders for information that will help you decide how many public folder mailboxes you'll need and where they should be located.

How do I know this worked?

To verify that you successfully created an Exchange 2016 public folder mailbox, do the following:

  1. In the EAC, go to Public folders > Public folder mailboxes.

  2. Select the public folder mailbox you just created, and then click Edit Edit icon. Verify that the mailbox database you selected is shown in the Mailbox database field. If you specified an organizational unit, it'll be shown in the Organizational unit field.
