Version: 1.0

General Information

Executive Summary

This security update resolves a privately reported vulnerability in Windows Server 2008 Hyper-V and Windows Server 2008 R2 Hyper-V. The vulnerability could allow denial of service if a specially crafted packet is sent to the VMBus by an authenticated user in one of the guest virtual machines hosted by the Hyper-V server. An attacker must have valid logon credentials and be able to send specially crafted content from a guest virtual machine to exploit this vulnerability. The vulnerability could not be exploited remotely or by anonymous users.

This security update is rated Important for all supported x64-based editions of Windows Server 2008 and Windows Server 2008 R2. For more information, see the subsection, Affected and Non-Affected Software, in this section.

The security update addresses the vulnerability by correcting the way that the Hyper-V Server processes malformed requests from virtual machines. For more information about the vulnerability, see the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) subsection for the specific vulnerability entry under the next section, Vulnerability Information.

FAQ for VMBus Persistent DoS Vulnerability - CVE-2011-1872

What is the scope of the vulnerability?
This is a denial of service vulnerability. An attacker who exploited this vulnerability could cause the affected Hyper-V server to stop responding, requiring a restart. Note that the denial of service vulnerability would not allow an attacker to execute code or to elevate their user rights on the Hyper-V server, but it could cause the affected system to stop accepting requests.

What causes the vulnerability?
The vulnerability is due to insufficient validation of specific packets sent from the guest to the host. Due to this lack of validation, processing of these instructions causes excess resource consumption in the Hyper-V server application.

What is Hyper-V?
Hyper-V is a hypervisor-based technology that is a key feature of Windows Server 2008 and Windows Server 2008 R2. It provides a scalable, reliable, and highly available virtualization platform. This type of environment is useful because you can create and manage virtual machines, which allows you to run multiple operating systems on one physical computer and isolate the operating systems from each other.

What might an attacker use the vulnerability to do?
An attacker who successfully exploited this vulnerability could cause a user’s system to stop responding and require a restart. Note that this vulnerability can result in complete resource consumption of the Hyper-V server, including all guest virtual machines hosted by that server.

How could an attacker exploit the vulnerability?
An attacker would have to be an authenticated administrator in one of the guest virtual machines hosted by the Hyper-V server. The attacker would need to have the ability to execute arbitrary code on that system, for instance by running an untrusted executable. This executable could then invoke a malformed sequence of machine instructions that would result in resource consumption, resulting in an infinite loop on the Hyper-V server that prevents processing of requests from other virtual machines.

What permissions are required by an attacker to execute this Denial of Service Attack?
In order to perform this denial of service attack against the Hyper-V server and all running virtual machines running on the Hyper-V server, the attacker must have administrator privileges to one of the virtual machines hosted on the Hyper-V server. The attacker is not required to have Administrator access on the Hyper-V server itself.

What systems are primarily at risk from the vulnerability?
Hyper-V servers that host guest virtual machines which allow access to untrusted users are at particular risk of this vulnerability.

What does the update do?
This update corrects the way the Hyper-V Server processes malformed requests from virtual machines. The fix allows the Hyper-V server application to properly validate VMBus packets sent from the guest to the host.

When this security bulletin was issued, had this vulnerability been publicly disclosed?
No. Microsoft received information about this vulnerability through coordinated vulnerability disclosure.

When this security bulletin was issued, had Microsoft received any reports that this vulnerability was being exploited?
No. Microsoft had not received any information to indicate that this vulnerability had been publicly used to attack customers when this security bulletin was originally issued.
